About the Department
This is semi-professional human service work planning and coordinating recreational activities, and disseminating information to residents of city-owned senior citizen complex and other public housing markets. The employee also assists in providing individual counseling and social services to residents. Work is performed under the general direction of the Housing Director, but requires considerable independent judgment and initiative.
Position Duties
- Plans, coordinates, and sets up equipment for games and social activities for residents of senior citizen apartment complexes.
- Prepares and maintains a social calendar, bus trip schedule, a vendor service list, and related records and reports for five senior citizen buildings.
- Interacts and consults with representatives of each senior citizen building.
- Assists with providing counseling and social services for residents and their families, Section 8 Program Tenants, senior citizens of Dearborn, and counseling for the Health Care Program.
- Informs residents, tenants, and their families of social, legal, recreational, health and other services available throughout the community, and makes appropriate referrals.
- Prepares bi-monthly newsletter and bus driver schedules.
- Operates 16 passenger van to transport residents in the absence of regular bus drivers.
- Assists disabled and partially disabled residents in boarding and exiting van.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance and performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
? Develops and implements programs and services for residents, connects residents with needed
resources, works with existing partners and establishes new partnerships to leverage
opportunities for residents
? Connects residents to direct services including social, instructional, life skill classes, educational
and computer workshops. Assists participants in completing all necessary application /
enrollment forms
? Completes paperwork, required reports and case notes accurately and timely
? Seeks out new program funding sources, writes for public and private grants and works toward
program sustainability
? Documents participant progress and re-evaluates services for adequacy
? Creates and maintains a directory of available resources and attendance / participation
? Submits stories, pictures and information on a monthly basis for Resident Newsletter, website
and other social media outlets
? Assists PHA resident groups in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations
? Performs related work as required
Other Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate degree in a recreation, social work, or health related field. Considerable experience organizing group recreation and/or social activities and working with senior citizens, or an equivalent combination of education and experience which results in the ability to perform essential functions. Certification in first aid and CPR techniques a plus.
