About the Department

The Roads Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the repair, maintenance, and construction of the County’s road and bridge systems within District I (Sequim, WA). This position supervises Road Maintenance Workers and other assigned staff, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality work standards. The Supervisor is expected to be knowledgeable in the operation and use of departmental equipment, with expertise in specific types of road maintenance and construction tools and techniques. Responsibilities include applying practical field knowledge to resolve problems, recommend process improvements, and provide input on personnel actions such as hiring, training, assignments, and performance management. Effectiveness is evaluated through reports, inspections, and overall results achieved in maintaining public safety and uninterrupted service on County roads. General supervision is received from the County Engineer or designee, with significant responsibility for ensuring operational efficiency and proper use of personnel and equipment.

Position Duties

  • Plan, assign, supervise and/or perform the regular and recurring or irregular maintenance, repair and installation work on County roads, bridges and related facilities in a specific district
  • Select appropriate equipment and materials to complete work according to specifications, verbal instructions and established procedures; as necessary, adapt equipment and materials to meet specific requirements of the job
  • Inspect road drainage conditions to determine need for repair; resolve drainage problems; supervise the elimination of blockages and make other necessary corrections and repairs
  • Identify road and equipment repair needs and recommend corrective action
  • Inspect road and equipment repair work during its performance and upon its completion
  • Work with shorelines, fisheries and Department of Natural Resources on culvert replacement; schedule, assign and follow work procedure on hydraulic work permits
  • Oversee flood control and maintenance of all man made dikes on rivers that have to be maintained
  • Drive and check hazardous road conditions; on call at any time of the night for wind, snow or flooding
  • Oversee snow removal and sanding operations; coordinate routing, schedules and personnel
  • In coordination with the Purchasing Agent, purchase necessary materials; discuss purchasing problems and issues with vendors; assure an efficient and effective system to purchase, secure and utilize divisional supplies and equipment
  • Confer with contractors performing work in designated area to which assigned; work to resolve problems of a mutual interest
  • Formulate and prepare initial budget estimate for supplies and materials needed in assigned area
  • Maintain daily records of equipment, personnel and materials used for each maintenance project
  • Train employees in the safe operation of departmental equipment, tools, work techniques and skills
  • As required, direct tree falling and/or trimming utilizing rigging, belts, power saws and related equipment
  • Supervise and coordinate major construction projects with other departments
  • Perform all work in accordance with sound safety practices
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within scope of knowledge and authority or refer to employee of higher classification
  • Respond to off-hour emergencies as necessary
  • Install, maintain or monitor Best Management Practices related to Federal, State and local water, habitat, and air quality standards
  • Duties as assigned

Other Qualifications

Requires knowledge of the field of assignment sufficient to perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of responsibility as illustrated by examples in the above job description


Education/Training/Experience

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in maintenance, construction or a related field; Five years’ experience in municipal road construction and maintenance with three years of supervisory experience preferred.
