Your opportunity

New Relic is looking for a Director of Engineering to lead the evolution of our core platform, the New Relic Database (NRDB). NRDB is the exabyte-scale analytics platform that powers all the insights and analytics for our observability products. As a Director, you'll be responsible for scaling, optimizing, and innovating this critical system, ensuring it continues to provide the fast, reliable, and powerful analytics our customers depend on. You'll lead a team of talented engineers spread across the US and Spain, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.

What you'll do

  • Lead the NRDB vision: Drive the technical strategy and roadmap for NRDB, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of our platform and customers.
  • Innovate at scale: Oversee the development of our next-generation distributed database engine and exabyte-scale analytics platform.
  • Manage a global team: Lead, mentor, and grow a globally distributed team of engineers, promoting a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Champion operational excellence: Ensure the NRDB platform is highly available, performant, and reliable, and that our teams maintain a high standard of code quality and operational practices.
  • Collaborate across teams: Partner with product management, engineering leaders, and other stakeholders to align on priorities and deliver value to our customers.
  • Recruit and retain talent: Attract, hire, and retain top engineering talent to build a world-class team.

This role requires

  • Minimum 12 - 15 years of relevant experience in large scale environment.
  • Deep technical expertise: Significant experience building and operating database engines, distributed systems, or other high-performance systems at scale. You should have a solid understanding of database internals, query processing, and data storage architectures.
  • Leadership experience: Proven experience managing engineering teams, ideally with experience managing geographically dispersed teams.
  • Communication and collaboration: Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strategic thinking: The ability to define and execute on a long-term technical vision while also delivering on short-term goals.
  • Problem-solving: A passion for solving complex, large-scale technical challenges.
  • Adaptability: Experience working in a fast-paced, agile environment.
