About the Department
Provides intrusive academic advisement and transitional support for students enrolled in the TRIO Student Support Services program. Assists with the implementation of program events and activities to meet program goals and objectives defined by the TRIO SSS grant.
Position Duties
A. Advises a caseload of eligible students by conducting needs assessments and creating academic plans with course selections that align with participants’ career goals. Monitors academic progress towards graduation while completing documentation required by Kankakee Community College (KCC) and the U.S. Department of Education.
B. Provides professional guidance and advisement to program participants regarding postsecondary admissions, programs of study, careers, financial aid, personal and educational issues. Assists participants with the completion of admissions applications to transfer institutions and informs students of application deadlines. Assists students with completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and interprets financial aid award letters.
C. Contributes to retention efforts by periodically following up with participants, implementing remediation plans, making referrals to college and community resources and continuously monitoring progress towards graduation and transfer.
D. Contributes to the student recruitment process by generating enrollment reports and contacting potential students. Makes presentations to prospective students, faculty, staff and advisors, explaining program eligibility guidelines and program goals in order to obtain referrals. Completes the onboarding process with new program participants by ensuring appropriate supporting documentation is secured, communicating grant objectives, program resources and student expectations.
E. Develops and conducts workshops for participants to improve academic skills, financial and economic literacy and increase knowledge of financial aid and transfer requirements. Manages the student portal (Canvas) to inform participants of upcoming events, deadlines and any pertinent information. Conducts and analyzes event survey results to determine the effectiveness of programming and implement appropriate changes.
F. Documents confidential student information and services rendered in Colleague and TRIO databases. Maintains paper and electronic records of information on participants, including participant eligibility, program participation, academic plans, educational goal achievement and other postsecondary plans.
G. Coordinates program event details which includes securing contracts with external stakeholders.
H. In collaboration with program staff, assists with gathering information required for the Department of Education’s Annual Performance Report and assists with the grant writing application process.
Minimum Qualifications
A. Bachelor's degree required in education administration, special education administration, student personnel, counseling or a related area preferred.
B. Three years experience in working with underrepresented student populations preferred.
C. Community college experience preferred.
D. Work experience with federal or state grant programs particularly for disadvantaged students preferred.
E. Qualified candidate must have strong oral and written communication skills, computer experience with Microsoft office or comparable software applications.
