About the Department
DEFINITION: This position is responsible for participating in the work of the survey party.
REPORTS TO: The Survey Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions.
An incumbent in this position may be designated as Survey Party Technician I/ or II dependent upon the qualification, experience and knowledge of the selected applicant.Position Duties
SURVEY PARTY TECHNICIAN I
- Establishes control points and survey limits for surveys.
- Operates surveying total station and data collector, GPS, and level to obtain accurate surveying data.
- Prepares field notes; performs accurate calculations to assist in the survey process.
- Performs various duties commensurate with a Survey Party Chief.
- Cleans and adjusts survey instruments.
- Sets survey stakes and hubs in accordance with survey plans and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
SURVEY PARTY TECHNICIAN II
- Performs work typically associated with a senior party chief
- Operates surveying equipment to obtain accurate surveying data.
- Completes research, prepares field measurements, field notes, performs calculations, and operates drafting and survey software to assist in the survey process.
- Assist the Survey Manager with duties and is part of the overall survey crew
- Maintains equipment in reliable working order.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
SURVEY PARTY TECHNICIAN I
- High School Degree or GED. Associate degree preferred.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work.
SURVEY PARTY TECHNICIAN II
- Possession of a North Carolina Board, Surveyor Intern (SI) Certification
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with an associates degree education
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated

- Knowledge of land survey nomenclature and symbols.
- Knowledge of computers, operating systems and typical office word processing programs including email.

- Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports.
- Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
- Skill in setting priorities for competing projects.
- Skill in operating and maintaining surveying vehicles and equipment.
- Skill in interpersonal relations.
- Skill in following oral and written instructions.
SURVEY PARTY TECHNICIAN II

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Survey Manager assigns work in terms of general instructions. The Survey Manager spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related technical duties. Environmental conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in surveying operations. Success in this position ensures the accuracy of data.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, engineers, external surveyors, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, and grease. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
