About the Department

The Pest Control Specialist maintains the pest eradication program of the Housing Department; responsible for the proper application of various pesticides in compliance with safety standards, governmental laws and regulations; responsible for scheduling and maintenance of records associated with the pest eradication.

Position Duties

  1. Execute work assignments in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, housing regulations, and standards of safety applicable to the pest control trade.
  2. Apply chemical solution, powders, and toxic gasses to control/eliminate a variety of insects and vermin; set mechanical traps as needed.
  3. Inspect buildings and grounds; determine levels of infestation, and recommends required treatment.
  4. Prior to treatment, clears the general area to expose harboring pests.
  5. Schedule weekly extermination, inspections, extermination activity, and follow-up on evaluations.
  6. Train Pest Control Technicians, as needed and provide guidance and assistance with more complex tasks.
  7. Maintains complete and up-to-date records of extermination activities, including but not limited to inspections, chemicals, follow-up evaluation of unit serviced
  8. Ensures daily maintenance of tools, vehicle, and equipment
  9. Will be required to be on-call as needed
  10. Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as requested by supervisor or director.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • The techniques, standards, and methods used in the eradication of various pest and vermin infestations;
  • Cultural and social environment of tribal organization and administration;
  • HUD regulations, program requirements, policies, and procedures;
  • Yaqui culture, customs, resources and traditions and/or a willingness to learn.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Analyze infestation problems and develop recommendations for feasible, effective solutions;
  • Deal effectively with residents before, during, and after eradication activities, use extermination equipment, and chemicals;
  • Organize and complete the internal processes of record keeping for the pest eradication program;
  • Exercise judgment in prioritizing and scheduling activities;
  • Maintain, service, and repair equipment related to the job (e.g., spray equipment);
  • Work well with people of varied socioeconomic backgrounds;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other agencies, and public;
  • Perform basic mathematical computations and some office duties;
  • Prepare clear, concise reports and recommendations;
  • Follow verbal and written instructions;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing;
  • Achieve the goals and mission of the pest control services team;
  • Operate a variety of office equipment, including a computer and related software applications;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with co-workers, supervisor, management, Council members, and the public. Have ability to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive verbal and written work instructions.

Other Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED and three (3) years of experience in pest control or related field: and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Special Requirements:

  • Must hold a State of Arizona Pest Control License in General Pest Control and Wood Destroying Organisms; 
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver's License; 
  • This position will require the incumbent to work non-traditional hours, nights, and weekends; 
  • Must have a current Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card or be able to obtain the Level 1 Arizona Clearance Card within ninety (90) days of hire. Failure to maintain a current Level 1 Clearance Card will result in termination.
