Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM):
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state. 

 

Role Overview

 

This position serves as a compliance inspector in the Hazardous Waste Compliance Section. Inspectors visit various types of regulated facilities throughout Indiana to review processes and ensure all hazardous wastes have been properly identified and managed. Inspectors make a compliance determination and write detailed reports of their observations and findings, and include supporting documentation or evidence. The ideal candidate is able to communicate well (verbal and written), work independently, and manage multiple tasks. Attention to detail is key. Most work days will fall within standard work hours, but field work may require longer days with early start and/or late end times. Overnight travel is uncommon but possible on occasion. This position requires a valid Indiana driver's license. 

 

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Interpret federal and state rules, regulations, policies, and guidelines pertaining to hazardous and solid waste issues; provide information and guidance to internal and external customers
  • Conduct comprehensive compliance inspections at a variety of commercial and industrial locations (includes pre-inspection file reviews and preparation)
  • Document inspection findings and compliance determination in detailed and well-written reports; ensure established timeframes are met
  • Support inspection findings that may be subject to administrative, civil, or criminal legal proceedings
  • Resolve informal actions within established timeframes by issuing a Return to Compliance Letter or a referral to the Land Enforcement Section
  • Monitor assignments and plan schedule to maintain a balanced workload
  • Perform related duties as assigned

 

 

Job Requirements: 

  • Baccalaureate degree in environmental science, environmental policy, or a relevant field
  • Specialized experience in hazardous and industrial waste issues
  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices of hazardous waste management and ability to apply these principles as they relate to program areas
  • Knowledge of the sciences (chemistry, biology, physics) as they relate to hazardous waste
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Work well under pressure
