Purpose of the Position:
Contribute to SCMP’s North America coverage by ensuring accuracy and improvement of copy through editing, rewriting and fact checking
In this role, you will:
- Ensure all copy is produced to exacting standards, conforming to SCMP style as well as fact checked and edited for clarity and concision
- Work across the newsroom, collaborating with reporters and editors to generate analytical content that will resonate with our readers
- Pitch and implement ideas that result in thought-provoking graphics and infographics that reframe concepts in an easy-to-digest and compelling manner
- Help organize information and build information-collection tools that will increase the team’s productivity
- In some cases, interview experts, analysts, leaders and other people with opinions that matter to our subscribers
Skills and Experience that will lead to success:
- At least eight years of copy editing experience for a national- or international-level news publication. Reporting experience is beneficial
- Impeccable attention to detail in proofing English-language copy
- A talent for analysis, with the ability to recognize flawed logic in existing copy, whether the topic is political, economic, financial, scientific or general interest
- An ability to convey complex ideas in crisp, clean, concise style
- Creativity in conceptualizing graphic and other multimedia content is an advantage
- Strong news judgment
- Ability to work effectively in a team
