Bellarmine College Preparatory, a Jesuit secondary school, has been educating young “men for and with others” in the tradition of St. Ignatius Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus, since 1851.
Bellarmine College Preparatory, located in San José, California invites applications for a part-time Rhetoric teacher beginning September, 2025. This is a semester long position. Responsibilities:- Teach three sections of a semester-long Rhetoric Honors course introducing students to the fundamentals of public speaking, speechwriting, and debate
- Design and deliver lessons on the foundational elements of delivery, including voice, physical presence, confidence, and polish
- Instruct students in the preparation, writing, and presentation of speeches across multiple competitive formats, including Original Oratory, Original Advocacy, Informative Speaking, and Extemporaneous Speaking
- Guide students through the fundamentals of Policy Debate, with an emphasis on communication for lay audiences rather than technical debate specialists
- Provide individualized feedback on student speeches and debates to foster growth in content, delivery, and strategic thinking
- Create assessments, rubrics, and performance-based evaluations aligned with course objectives
- Collaborate with the Speech and Debate program to ensure alignment between classroom instruction and extracurricular competition opportunities
- Maintain high academic standards while supporting students in developing confidence, authenticity, and a lifelong appreciation for the power of effective communication
- Hold regular office hours and meet with students who need assistance
- Communicate regularly with parents, counselors, and administrators to ensure the success of each student
- Abide by all school policies and regulations
- Complete other duties and/or projects as assigned
Minimum Qualifications/Skills:- Bachelor’s degree in English, Communication, Education or a related field
- Ability to work effectively with staff and students at all levels, displaying a positive attitude, demonstrating cultural proficiency, and exhibiting motivation and drive; this includes the ability to provide clear expectations to students while building positive relationships
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, and successfully interact with external and internal constituents; this includes the ability to resolve conflicts
- Self-directed with proven ability to assume responsibility, work independently, creatively solve problems, and move work/projects to completion with minimal supervision
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications and the ability to operate all other applicable software
- Ability to perform the job safely with respect to others, property, and individual safety
Preferred Qualifications/Skills:- Master’s Degree in Teaching (or similar degree)
- Prior teaching experience at the high school or collegiate level, ideally in public speaking, rhetoric, or debate
- Strong background in competitive Speech and Debate, with familiarity in the events of Original Oratory, Original Advocacy, Informative Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, and Policy Debate
- Demonstrated ability to teach both the technical and performative aspects of communication, including delivery, confidence, authenticity, and composure
- Commitment to fostering critical thinking, student growth, and inclusive classroom practices
- Ability to mentor students with varying levels of experience, from beginners to advanced competitors
Physical Requirements:- Ability to lift 20 pounds, using proper lifting techniques
- Ability to sit, stand, and/or move around the classroom as needed
- Ability to safely and comfortably travel around our campus
- Ability to use a keyboard (or an alternative input device) and other office equipment
- Ability to read information in printed material and on a computer screen (often for extended periods of time) and/or on a mobile device/laptop
General Information:- This position pays according to our established faculty salary scale, available here.
- This position is classified as a Regular Part-Time Exempt position; employees in exempt positions are expected to work as many hours as their job responsibilities require, which could include evenings and weekends.

- This position will begin work early September and is to be completed in accordance with the published school calendar as instructed by the school’s administration
