Description

Advocates is urgently seeking a Mentor (DSP/1:1 support staff) to support a bright and active woman with a developmental disability. Though this individual is delightful in general, there are occasions where she has verbal outbursts and can become physically aggressive. Candidates interested in this position must be comfortable with these behaviors. She and her family are looking for a mentor to assist her with working on her goals both at home and in her community. This mentor position will be responsible for building a weekly routine and gathering daily activities and events and putting them into a calendar. Prior experience working with an individual with autism is greatly appreciated and preferred. This individual enjoys photography, gardening, crafting, and Disney movies, and is a budding entrepreneur.

 
Goals include: 
• Social skills - making community connections and friendships while engaging in conversations and activities with others

• Independent living skills - grocery shopping, cooking, personal care tasks, and ensuring a clean and safe living space

• Volunteering - participating in and/or seeking out new volunteer positions in the community

• Safety skills - practicing safety in the home and the community while in parking lots and traffic, and by practicing fire and emergency drills at home

 
Seeking a DSP who is reliable, enthusiastic, creative, and active. Related experience working with individuals with disabilities and autism and behaviors/redirection preferred. Please respond with resume or summary of experience. 

 

Candidate must possess a keen sense of attention to detail, especially when electronically logging each day's time, mileage, and service documentation. DSP must have a valid email address.
 
Hours and days of work

Monday through Friday (8 AM - 3:30 PM)

Tuesday overnight (5:30 PM Tuesday - 8:15 AM Wednesday)

Sunday overnight (5:30 PM Sunday - 8:15 AM Monday)

Full-time opportunities may be available.

 

Pay rate: $24-$26 per hour (depending on behavioral experience) when providing direct support.

The hourly rate for indirect/training is $15.50 per hour.

Location: Baldwinsville, NY

  • Education & Experience: GED or High School Diploma preferred. Applicable job experience preferred.
  • Desired Skills and Abilities: previous experience working 1:1 in a related service environment preferred. Knowledge of disability related issues preferred.
  • Other: The individual does not have the authority to set the staff salary in this model. The Mentor is paid at the provider’s rate for the service based on an assessment of the specific support needs of the individual in the areas of behavioral support, communication support, and physical support needs.
