About the Department
POSITION SUMMARY:
An employee in this position provides security and performs protection related, preventive services at the Harnett County Courthouse and/or Harnett County Detention Cent for the Office of the Sheriff. This includes following and enforcing policies and procedures; observing people entering and visiting the facility/building; reviewing identification; screening people and their property with imaging equipment; using wands and conducting pat down searches; identifying dangerous objects in brief cases, bags, or on the visitor; and preventing those objects for being transported inside the property.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:
- Interacts with the public; gives directions; checks people in for appointments/court dates and rooms; and responds to inquiries in a reasonable tone and manner.
- Maintains focus and awareness within an environment containing numerous distractions, people, and noise.
- Stands and remains standing for periods up to 3 hours without sitting depending on assignment.
- Lifts and/or assists another individual to lift (from the ground) an object weighing 40 pounds.
- Works within a challenging environment, which includes noise from alarms, machinery, and people, distractions, time demands, disruptive and angry person(s), and the requirements to identify and locate potentially life-threatening devices and devices intended on creating massive destruction.
- Makes effective decisions in both crisis and routine situations.
- Works an assigned shift; may work evenings and weekends depending on location and duties.
- Performs various tasks such as: searching bags and briefcases while avoiding hazards; using a wand or operating a metal detector/imaging equipment; conducting pat down searches; and screening and reviewing personal Identification.
- Being prepared for emergency situations.
- Monitoring radio traffic.
- Checking all delivery packages.
- Works an assigned shift; may work evenings and weekends depending on location and duties.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- No experience required;
- Or equivalent education and/or experience.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina driver's license.
- Be at least age 21.
- Demonstrating a daily a fitness for duty without impairment due to illegal drugs, sleep deprivation, medication, or alcohol.
- Possession of a Certification in CPR desired.
- Completion of the minimum requirements of 40 hours of training on Courthouse Security provided by the Harnett County Sheriff’s Office.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to weapons on government property and other laws associated with screening of citizens.
- Knowledge of policies and procedures covering security at the courthouse, detention center, or government buildings.
- Skill in using a scanner and recognizing what certain objects look like under a scanner.
- Skill in searching a bag or briefcase while avoiding certain hazards.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergency situations.
- Ability to work in a hazardous and confining work environment.
- Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisor and the public.
- Ability to actively listen to inmate/visitor conversations and sounds in the facility and exercise judgment in determining potential security problems.
- Ability to quickly assess situations.
- Ability to remain calm in emergency situations.
Other Qualifications
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to perform medium work frequently exerting up to 30 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; and occasionally requiring to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. This work also involves the physical abilities of balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, discriminating among sounds, kneeling, lifting, having manual dexterity, using mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, performing repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word, shouting to be heard above ambient noise, and walking. An incumbent must also possess the visual acuity to analyze data, process records and reports, observe activities, determine neatness, work with color or depth perception, determine accuracy, operate equipment, and inspect images.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The employee is subject to hazards associated with and including: working in inside environments; exposure to various hazards such as noise, a variety of physical conditions, and close quarters; and with exposure to human body fluid and thus are subject to OSHA requirements on blood borne pathogens. The employee is assigned a shift.
