About the Department

Responsible for a number of broad and diverse tasks that include but are not limited to project managing, customer permit applications, assisting customers with their plan residential development projects and working with County professionals to provide accurate information to applicants.

Assist residents and permit applicants with their developmental projects, being the face of the Central Permit Facility (CPF) through phone and personal interactions while also working with other employees and departments of Lake County. 

Position Duties

  • Receive and process applications for permits on new buildings, remodeling and alterations, construction of swimming pools, relocation of existing buildings and related activity.
  • Act as the point of contact from submittal to closure of permit projects 
  • Review plans in sufficient detail to determine the amount of fee to be charged by figuring square footage, volume, number and type of plumbing fixtures, the electrical, sewage and disposal, or any other characteristics of the structures necessary for the decision.
  • Dispatch information to field inspector or supervisor working in the field, schedule inspection activities including commercial inspections.
  • Assist with inquiries from individuals who have been red tagged for ordinance violations to indicate what action must be taken in order to correct the violation.
  • Verify legal description of property or permit application and check zone to determine whether or not the proposed use is permitted in the zone in question.
  • Answers questions of prospective builders and homeowners regarding zoning, permitted use in various zones, required set back in various zones and matters pertaining to non-conformance recorded cost.
  • Assist at the welcome desk answering phone calls and public walk-ins. 
  • All other related duties as assigned. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Gathers, organizes, analyzes, examines, or evaluates data or information.
  • Gives information, guidance, or assistance to people or may give instructions or assignments to helpers or assistants.
  • Reads technical instructions, charts, and/or procedures manuals; composes routine reports and completes job forms; speaks compound sentences using standard grammar.
  • Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.

Education and/or Other Requirements:

  • Requires High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • One year of experience in building construction is preferred but not required. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking some of the time, exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a regular basis, and moderate dexterity in operating machinery, tools, or office equipment.
  • Should have excellent working knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite, a good understanding of computers and technology, exceptional people skills when working with the public and professionals and be able to multitask while performing multiple tasks. 
  • Additionally, have the ability to effectively problem solve and work both individually and in a team atmosphere is required.
