Animal Control Operator chez Yellowstone County, MT

About the Department

Performs duties of a quasi-law enforcement nature including enforcement of State animal laws, County codes and public service tasks related to the care, control, and licensing of animals within Yellowstone County's boundaries; does related work as required.

Position Duties

• Educate and provide the public through social media with information regarding lost animals, help locating animals,  animal control laws, licensing requirements, owner responsibilities, and appropriate animal care;
• Prioritizes, schedules and responds to citizen or law enforcement complaints regarding animal control such as vicious dogs, animals harassing livestock and feral dogs;
• Investigate reports of animal cruelty, nuisances, and potentially dangerous animals; communicate with and advise owners of loose animals;
• Responds to citizen or law enforcement complaints regarding animal abuse, cruelty and neglect; investigates livestock related issues;
• Assist law enforcement personnel and other agencies by taking animals into custody due to death, emergencies, arrests, and/or police investigations.  May be required to forcibly enter a residence to obtain an animal.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience/Training:

• Graduation from high school or G.E.D.;
• Two years’ experience working with animals in a field closely related to animal control; 
• Or any equivalent combination of education and experience totaling two (2) years.

Recruitment & selection processes will involve an oral interview, criminal background and driver’s record checks.  Post offer, pre-employment physical required.  

Desired Qualifications:

• Previous experience in working with and handling/controlling animals is desired such as equine school; Additional training or course work in law enforcement and experience with animal control; Knowledge of social media platforms.

Certifications:

• Valid driver's license issued by the State of Montana;
• Ability to obtain additional licenses and/or certifications as required by the position.

Any individual with a felony conviction, a domestic violence conviction or outstanding warrant is ineligible for consideration for employment by the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Office.
