About the Parks and Environment Division
Construction and Repair Crew Chief. This position will report to the Natural Resource Unit Manager

The Construction and Repair Crew Chief will plan, organize, and prioritize work for subordinate staff assigned to construction and repair of Parks and Public Works facilities. This is a first-line supervisor which, under general supervision, supervises crews which may include Laborers, Truck Drivers, Equipment Operators, and other subordinates in performing construction, repair and maintenance work for the Parks and Public Works Departments.
Position Duties
The Heavy Crew chief supervises a team of heavy equipment and heavy truck drivers in support of Seattle Parks and Recreation grounds and operations citywide. The Heavy Crew Chief is responsible for planning workloads, scheduling staff, allocating equipment and materials, laying out jobs, instructing employees in how to accomplish the work, observing the safe and efficient progress of the work, and reviewing the finished product for conformance to standards. They are also responsible for weekly reporting, monthly Unit presentations, and supporting hiring and onboarding new staff. Personal contacts are with department directors, Natural Resource Unit and Grounds district managers, crew chiefs, surveyors, engineers and private contractors to coordinate work projects and with vendors to discuss equipment purchases. Contact with the public is to provide information to questions or complaints. Examples of duties include:
- Assigns daily work and set section priorities for subordinate staff during daily dispatch.
- Inspects projects performed by subordinate staff and contractors, making on-site visits.
- Coordinates heavy equipment emergency and storm response.
- Maintains personnel and technical records; prepares related reports and correspondence
- Coordinates work flow and emergency services with other divisions including Grounds Maintenance, Recreation, and Plumbing, Electrical, Machine, Paint and Carpenter Shops.
- Monitors budgeted expenditures and prepares recommendations and justifications for the program’s budget including supplies, services, utilities, and equipment.
- Provides oversight of citywide turf crew managing ballfield care and artificial turf citywide in collaboration with grounds-district staff.
- Ensures equipment is serviced according to preventive maintenance schedules.
- Supervises, disciplines, monitors and evaluates subordinates performance.
- Performs other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned

You will be successful in this role if you have:
- Experience with supervising the operation of heavy trucks, including multi-axle trucks and truck/trailer or tractor/trailer combinations.
- Four years of parks, grounds, heavy truck, operator, or related experience including a minimum of one year with lead responsibilities and the ability to supervise others.
- Knowledge of City, State, and Federal rules and regulations governing the safe operation of truck/trailer and tractor/trailer combinations.
- A valid Washington State Commercial's Driver's License - Class "A", with the airbrake restriction removed, and a valid Medical Certificate. Some positions in this class may require other endorsements as required by law.
- A valid Washington State Flagging Card, First Aid/CPR card, and/or a defensive driving course certificate may be required within six months of employment. May also require appropriate crane certification as required by law.
Special Working Conditions:
Perform demanding and physically challenging work, including lifting more than 50 pounds up to waist level.
Bend, stoop and dig for extended periods of time.
Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, heavy traffic; entering confined spaces (such as maintenance chambers, holes and excavations).
Work any shift or schedule, including nights, evenings, weekends and holidays.
Respond to emergency conditions resulting in overtime with little or no notice.
Meet the conditions set forth in SPR Workplace Expectations.
May be required to be on call 24 hours/day to respond to emergencies.
And lift objects weighing in excess of 50 pounds;
Drive in both urban street and rural environment, including unimproved roads.
May be required to operate trucks on mountainous logging roads.
Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time;
Required to spend long periods of time driving trucks, often in heavy traffic and under adverse weather conditions.
Handle or work near toxic/hazardous substances; and work outdoors in all types of weather

The full salary range for this position is $45.30 to $48.98 per hour.
