Position Summary:

The 3rd Shift Sanitation Lead Trainer is responsible for executing and supporting the Education & Training (E&T) pillar within the Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) framework, with a dedicated focus on sanitation operations during the overnight shift. This role leads On-the-Job Training (OJT) for 3rd shift sanitation personnel, ensuring employees are properly trained in cleaning and sanitizing equipment, chemical handling, food safety, and regulatory compliance. The Lead Trainer functions as a hands-on coach, role model, and subject matter expert—building sanitation excellence through a culture of learning, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Position Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Training Delivery & Coaching

  • Deliver hands-on training in core sanitation tasks including equipment teardown and reassembly, CIP/COP procedures, allergen changeovers, zone separation, and pre-operational inspections.
  • Train on safe and effective use of sanitation chemicals, including proper dilution, application methods, dwell times, and neutralization steps.
  • Reinforce correct usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during high-risk activities such as chemical handling, pressurized washdowns, and confined space entry.
  • Provide daily coaching to sanitation team members and contract labor to ensure safe execution of cleaning procedures, minimizing cross-contamination and risk to food safety.

Skills Matrix Management & Qualification

  • Own and update the sanitation skills matrix for 3rd shift, ensuring accurate tracking of core task qualifications (e.g., line cleans, deep cleans, allergen cleans, SSOPs, master sanitation schedule items).
  • Perform hands-on assessments to certify employees on sanitation-specific tasks and document progress toward qualification.

“Know-Why” & TPM-Based Development

  • Train employees not only on “how” to clean and sanitize, but “why”—including microbiological risks, allergen migration, chemical hazards, and equipment damage potential from improper procedures.
  • Build operator awareness of how sanitation quality impacts start-up success, food safety, and unplanned downtime.
  • Support TPM through operator ownership of pre-cleaning checks and minor equipment care (e.g., inspecting gaskets, seals, and product contact surfaces).

Standard Work & Documentation

  • Partner with SMEs and Sanitation/FSQA leadership to ensure all SSOPs, One-Point Lessons (OPLs), and visual aids reflect up-to-date, regulatory-compliant methods.
  • Assist with development and documentation of training plans for cleaning procedures, allergen verification, ATP swabbing, pre-op readiness, etc.
  • Lead peer reviews and validation of sanitation documentation to meet FSQA and audit standards (USDA, FDA, GFSI, etc.).

Cross-Functional Communication & Support

  • Coordinate training efforts with FSQA, Maintenance, Operations, and Scheduling to minimize impact to line up time and production.
  • Actively participate in pre-op walkthroughs, sanitation inspections, and shift handoff meetings to support learning loops and feedback for improvement.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation for new sanitation associates in collaboration with HR and the E&T team.

Continuous Improvement & Feedback

  • Observe daily sanitation practices to identify procedural gaps, safety risks, or inefficiencies.
  • Recommend training enhancements, equipment adjustments, or safety improvements to mitigate risks and improve effectiveness.
  • Capture tribal knowledge from experienced team members and translate it into standardized training tools and procedures.

Operational Flexibility & Line Coverage

  • Must be able to perform or assist in all core sanitation tasks as needed, including full line disassembly, tank cleaning, belt sanitation, parts cart setup, etc.—especially during unplanned absences, coverage gaps, or time-sensitive cleanups.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of department-specific cleaning procedures and SSOPs to ensure credibility and coaching accuracy.
