About the Department
The Business Engagement Specialist plays a key role in supporting both the Small Business Center and work-based learning (WBL) initiatives, including registered apprenticeships. This position is responsible for program coordination, ensuring effective communication, organizing events and workshops, and maintaining accurate program records.
The specialist will actively engage with employers to promote apprenticeship opportunities and collaborate with ApprenticeshipNC to develop new training pathways. Regular interaction with small business owners, apprentices, students, and employer partners is essential to ensure program success through responsive customer service and efficient operational support.
The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, and enthusiastic about advancing small business growth and workforce development in the community.
Position Duties

Administrative Support
- Provide daily administrative support to the Small Business Center and apprenticeship programs.
- Schedule meetings and coordinate logistics for events, workshops, and training sessions.
- Prepare, organize, and distribute program materials and documentation.
- Respond promptly and professionally to inquiries from small business owners, apprentices, work-based learning students, and employer partners.
Program Coordination
- Plan, promote, and execute workshops, seminars, and other program-related events.
- Coordinate apprenticeship program activities, including participant enrollment, employer communication, and progress tracking.
- Support work-based learning (WBL) activities, including student enrollment, employer coordination, and data tracking.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and databases for small business and apprenticeship programs.
Outreach and Engagement
- Assist with outreach efforts by preparing and distributing promotional materials and communications.
- Serve as a point of contact for program participants, offering information, support, and guidance.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with small business owners, employer partners, and other stakeholders.

Education and/or Experience
- Associate Degree from an accredited institution
- Two years of work experience related to business, industry, or labor
Desired:
- Two years of experience partnering/working with a school system, community college, or university
- High degree of business acumen
- Entrepreneurial skills or small business experience
- Experience with apprenticeship programs
