Grader operators will receive an additional $2/hour from November through March!

This position performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of City streets, alleys, cul-de-sacs, parks, path ways and storm drainage facilities and systems.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Streets Supervisor or Foreman.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED 
None generally. May serve as a lead worker over seasonal workers.

Position Duties

Serves as an ambassador of the City of Steamboat Springs and upholds City values of Service, Teamwork, Integrity, Well-being, Respect and Compassion, while espousing safety at all times. 

Maintains approximately 80 miles of streets, 160 lane miles, 6 miles of alleys, 102 cul-de-sacs, 50 parking lots, trails and parks including painting of traffic markings and facilities; sanding, plowing and clearing of snow from streets, sidewalks and trails; mowing grass, trimming  trees and shrubs in the City’s right-of-ways; collection and disposal of trash and winter debris; constructing, repairing and installation of  drainage structures; placing  and finishing concrete and asphalt materials; and performance of  related duties.
 
Assists with scheduling and implementation of construction, maintenance, and operation and construction activities designed to provide quality street, pathway and park facilities for the city.
 
Operates a variety of medium-sized to heavy construction and power equipment including backhoe, loader, tandem axle trucks, graders, excavators etc. in performing job duties.  Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and fills out daily inspection sheets.
 
Maintains inventory of necessary material for street signs.  Creates, installs, replaces and/or repairs street signs and performs other duties relative to sign maintenance as required or assigned.
 
May be required to work Special Events during holiday periods.  May need to be available during periods of emergency or 24 hour call out.  Such activities include snow removal, street sweeping and/or flushing, monitoring mudslides and high water, sandbagging, cleaning debris, fallen trees and stop sign repair.
 
Assists in the training of lower level employees performing the duties of maintenance, construction and repair of streets, alleys, cul-de-sacs, parks, pathways and storm drainage systems and facilities.
 
Inspects and/or repairs, streets, alleys, cul-de-sacs and drainage systems, parks and pathways at frequent intervals to insure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
 
Maintains a variety of records and logs relating to inspections, materials, and maintenance activity.
 
Determines the locations of gas, telephone, power, television, water and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
 
Insures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
 
Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel, sand and snow.
 
Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned
equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor or mechanic.
 
Keeps equipment clean and in good operating order.
 
Performs all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards and policies.
 
Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, pavement repair, snow removal, pothole repair, street sweeping, flagging traffic for normal work zone or emergencies and painting crosswalks, handicap spots, sharrows,  etc.
 
Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment.
 
PERIPHERAL DUTIES
Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: 

  1. Graduation from high school education or GED equivalent, and
  2. Four (4) years of experience relating to construction, maintenance, or repair, or
  3. Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Necessary knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Considerable knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities;
  2. Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  3. Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; Ability to work safely; Ability to communicate effectively; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public; Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  4. Additional skills and abilities include operation monitoring (watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is operating properly; active listening; critical thinking (using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems); control precision ( the ability to quickly and repeatedly adjust the controls of a machine or a vehicle to exact positions; multi-limb coordination; near vision, depth perception, problem sensitivity and rate control ( the ability to time your movements or the movement of a piece of equipment in anticipation of changes in speed and/or direction of a moving object or scene).
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 
Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and ability to maintain one.
 
Will be on call from November 1st to April 1st and be available to plow snow for designated shift. This includes all weekends and Holidays.

Compensation range is $30.74 - $41.49/hour and placement within the range is dependent upon relevant experience and qualifications.
