Job Summary
The primary role of the product engineering co-ops is to assist senior product engineers at various stages of the product development process. Co-ops are exposed to all aspects of product development and will be able to see the impact they made on a product’s final design. Co-ops will be involved in reverse engineering practices, initial design benchmarking, reviewing and/or editing engineering drawings, and product validation testing. We are seeking future engineers who can think freely and use creative methods to solve problems and develop innovative solutions.
Primary Duties
- Benchmark Original Equipment (OE) automotive samples according to SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), ASTM, or other industry established testing standards
- Disassemble and measure automotive product samples with metrology equipment including vision and contact-based Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM)
- Interpret measurement data in engineering software including SolidWorks and FARO CAM2.
- Utilize SolidWorks for simple fixture design – SolidWorks mechanical design certifications made available to any co-op who wishes to take the exam.
- Utilize lab equipment for product testing: Material Harness Testers, Spring Rate Testers, Static Burst Tester, Tensile/Compression Testing Machines, Temperature Pressure and Flow Meters, and other Product Team specific testing equipment
- Learn and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to engineering drawings
- Analyze test results and provide conclusions to senior engineers for review Use problem solving processes to identify root cause of failures while recommending improvements and/or design changes
- Attend vehicle try-ons at Dorman’s on-site garage (The Proving Grounds)

- Physical Requirements: Capability to lift 50 pounds.
- Working Conditions: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach, swivel, carry items from one building to another, and speak and actively listen.
Education / Experience
- In school for mechanical engineering or similar degree.
- Preferred Majors: Eng. - Mechanical Engineering
Level of Experience Sought:
- Beginner - Limited or no previous work experience/first Co-op
- Intermediate - Some related work or volunteer experience/second Co-op
- Advanced - Previous related work experience/final Co-op
