Job Description:

Food Service Worker:

Position Purpose Summary: 

The Food Service Worker is an integral member of the team.  The Food Service Worker is responsible for food preparation, serving meals, cleaning and sanitizing of dining areas, and operating dishwashers by following the manufacturer’s instructions and Alberta Health guidelines.  The Food Services Worker receives support and direction from the Lead Cook.

Accountabilities:

Food Preparation and Storage

  • Prepare a variety of foods for service and catering including, but not limited to, cutting and peeling produce, preparation of proteins for cooking, slicing and cutting proteins, soup preparation, salads, sandwiches and appetizer preparation, cutting and plating desserts, salads, sandwiches, and catering platters.
  • Portion and wrap the food or place it directly on plates for service.
  • Store food in designated containers and storage areas to prevent spoilage.
  • Ensure all stored items are covered, labeled, and dated.
  • Organize, clean, and rotate items in coolers and freezers to ensure freshness; discard spoiled items.
  • General cleaning of the coolers and freezers.
  • Follow and comply with all Alberta Health Services food-safe regulations.
  • Report unsafe practices or professional misconduct to the Food Services Manager or designate
  • Other duties as assigned.

Housekeeping and Cleaning

  • Clean work areas, equipment, utensils, dishes, and silverware as per Alberta Health Services requirements and as needed.
  • Sanitize work areas, dining room tables, and chairs as per Alberta Health Services requirements and as needed.
  • Take out garbage and recyclables daily and when needed.
  • Record dishwasher and sanitizer PPM’s daily
  • General cleanup as required.

Customer and Food Service

  • As appropriate to the position, serve food items to clients/residents from counters and steam tables, by specific instructions, ensuring that appropriate portions are served.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:

   Internal:

  • Various ad hoc Committees as assigned.

MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position reports directly to the Lead Cook.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS management:

  • Ensure that all food service facilities and equipment are maintained according to the Edmonton Centre of Hope standards.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, manipulation of food, a moderate amount of lifting, carrying supplies, walking, and occasionally washing floors and kitchen equipment.  The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to bend, kneel, or stoop when required to lift items such as loads of dishes, kitchen tools, machinery, and food preparation equipment.
  • The performance of the job requires adherence to safety procedures and regulations.
  • All Food Services Workers are required to wear close-toed, non-skid shoes.  These shoes are a personal expense and must always be worn.
  • Multi-site work may be required.

Education and Experience Qualifications:

Education, Qualifications, and Certifications:

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Food Safe certification would be considered an asset.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen.
  • Strong knowledge of health and safety standards.
  • Must practice high standards of cleanliness and sanitization.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Must have good communication skills and be able to work in a team setting
  • Must maintain good relationships with other Food Services personnel and other facility employes
  • Effective organizational and time management skills
  • Reliability and punctuality are essential
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.  
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and follow safety procedures
  • Ability to lift and operate heavy objects.
  • The ability to work within the mandate of The Salvation Army Mission Statement, exemplifying Christian standards of conduct.

The incumbent’s work environment is typically at work sites within residential settings, and will require working under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry and abusive people
  • Verbal abuse
  • Exposure to bodily fluids, bodily waste
  • Exposure to drugs, alcohol, and solvents
  • The incumbent will work on call 24/7 or as scheduled.
  • Physical attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Sharp objects (i.e., needle sticks, knives, and weapons)
  • Other dangerous situations
  • Universal precautions
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis

This is a casual position. No fixed working schedule or hours.

Target hiring range for this position is $19.25 per hour at Step 1 to $20.70 per hour at Step 4

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $19.25 to $19.98 with a maximum of $20.70.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
