About the Department

Protects life and/or property through fire prevention, firefighting, search and rescue, and dive emergency activities using a variety of firefighting emergency techniques and equipment.

Position Duties

Essential Job Functions
  • Responds to emergency calls for service which include Fire; assists Search and Rescue (SAR) and Dive Teams 
  • Responds to fire emergencies including but not limited to, car fires and wildland fires. 
  • Operates fire apparatus to and from emergencies or when assigned to patrol during extremely high fire danger days (Red-Flag Warning days)
  • Performs Red-Flag Warning patrol operations.
  • Extinguishes fires and/or creates defensible areas to prevent the spread of fires.
  • Educates and prepares citizens to prevent fire by advising, guiding and/or assisting with fire mitigation.
  • Operates fire mitigation equipment such as a chain saw and/or woodchipper.
  • Effectively communicates in person, by radio, and by other electronic communication methods with peers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Assists with Search and Rescue (SAR) as needed.
  • Assists with Dive Team response as needed.
  • Uses and maintains knowledge of Incident Command System (ICS) protocols.
  • Attends Volunteer team meetings and other public meetings as required.
  • Performs mitigation projects.
  • Operates and maintains firefighting equipment and apparatus.
  • Performs duties while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) as needed.
  • Participates in continuous training programs deemed necessary and appropriate for the safe and effective performance of duties; maintains required certifications. 
  • Interfaces with the public at special events.
  • Performs other duties as appropriate or necessary for performance of the job. 
General Requirements
  • Fills in for other staff as necessary and/or required.
  • May be required to work mandatory overtime.
  • May be required to work alternate schedules and in other Pueblo County locations.
  • Attends meetings, classes, and trainings as required or requested by supervisor.
  • Encouraged to recommend changes to improve procedures that would result in efficiencies, cost savings and safety.
  • Communicates actively, clearly and regularly with supervisor and co-workers on all work-related topics.
  • Understands, observes and complies with all Governmental, Pueblo County and Departmental policies, procedures and protocols when performing job duties.
  • Effectively communicates in person, by radio, and by other electronic communication methods with peers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Pueblo County employees from same or different departments/offices, entities, vendors, members of the community and all customers.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidatesmustbeatleast21yearsofage and have a high school diploma or GED.  Minimum of one year of field experience performing firefighter duties required. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Colorado Driver’s License required. Successful completion of S130/190 course required. First Aid/ CPR certification required within 60 days of employment. Successful completion of IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 and L-180 courses required within 30 days of employment. Successful completion of S290 course preferred. Faller Class A or B certification preferred.

The selection process includes, but is not limited to, a panel interview. Prior to employment, candidates will complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, and physical examination to include a drug screen. The expected duration of the selection process will not normally exceed two months. Candidates not selected may reapply in the future. This posting may be used to fill multiple openings.
