About the Department
Hennepin County's Public Works department is seeking an Equipment Mechanic Leadworker in the Fleet Services division to coordinate, schedule, maintain, repair, and perform diagnostics on a variety of light vehicles at our Medina shop.
Location and hours:This position will be located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. Work hours will be 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. This position requires candidates to be available for on call duty after hours, weekends, and holidays.
About the position type:
This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Public Works department to apply. Limited duration employees are not eligible.
This position will require a one-year probation.
This position is internally classified as a Fleet Technician, Leadworker.

- Perform failure diagnosis and repairs to complex systems using, diagnostic equipment and procedures on medium duty trucks, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment.
- Maintain automobile and heavy-duty vehicle functional condition, conduct inspections, repair engine failures, repair mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions, and replace parts and components.
- Communicate to customers on repair status.
- Assist and direct work to Fleet Technicians.
- Provide direct support to the shop management team.
- Perform safety inspections.
- Order parts and supplies as required.
- Provide quality control on completed repairs.
- Document and record repairs using the fleet management information system.
- Perform detailed preventive maintenance to complex systems by following manuals, established maintenance schedules, and procedures on small equipment, attachments, vehicles, and light duty trucks.
- One of the following:
- Completion of an approved two-year program in automotive service or medium and heavy truck service from an accredited technical school and three years or more of experience servicing automotive equipment.
- Five or more years of experience in repairing and servicing automotive equipment.
- Related education and/or experience to total five years.
- Possession of four or more Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in either truck or automotive repair or the ability to obtain certifications within six months of employment.
- Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with airbrake and tanker endorsements and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit within six months of employment.
- Note: The department provides the necessary training and support to meet this requirement.
- Ability to:
- Lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Supply own full complement of mechanical tools.
- Experience:
- Using electronic testing and diagnostic equipment.
- Servicing light and medium duty trucks, class 7 or 8 trucks, light and heavy-duty construction equipment, small engine equipment, snowmobiles, boats, and other recreational equipment.
- Assisting and directing assigned employees
- Using wire feed welders, stick welders, and acetylene torches.
- Servicing hydraulic systems.
- Using fleet maintenance software.
- Using Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Express, Excel, Teams and Word) and/or comparable programs.
Fleet Services provides county departments with vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, vans, boats, trailers, on-road equipment, and off-road equipment for conducting official county business. Fleet Services supports 6 Business Lines, 20 departments. Core Services:
- Maintenance and repair of 1,200 county vehicles and equipment.
- Providing vehicles and equipment for customers, including those with only occasional needs, through our fleet motor pool, available throughout various Hennepin County facilities.
- Asset management, budgeting, and reporting; this includes vehicle and equipment replacement, scheduling, forecasting and specific analytics such as fuel usage, vehicle location, driving habits, etc.
- Fuel management, fuel system management, consumables tracking and reporting.
- Specification development for procurement of vehicles and equipment with customer involvement to provide the most cost effective, reliable, and sustainable vehicle and/or equipment for their operations.
