Job Purpose
We are seeking a Project Manager 1 with a minimum of 2 years of project management experience to support the Department of Labor & Economic Opportunity, including the Michigan State Housing Development Corporation, the Unemployment Insurance Agency, and the Attorney General’s Office. The Project Manager will work under broad supervision, assisting with larger, more complex initiatives or leading smaller projects. The role requires familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures in project management, as well as the ability to plan and accomplish goals with creativity and judgment.

Requirements

  • Design, plan, and coordinate work teams, following PMI framework standards.
  • Work closely with project sponsors to understand business and technical objectives.
  • Create project charters and work plans, and track budget and schedule progress using appropriate metrics.
  • Establish project organization and methodologies, defining team roles and responsibilities.
  • Document project risks and develop mitigation plans.
  • Manage project scope and create communication plans.
  • Build and lead effective teams by assigning tasks and evaluating outcomes.
  • Negotiate resources and communicate effectively with stakeholders and project sponsors.
  • Identify, track, and resolve project issues while removing barriers to success.
  • Provide technical support and manage application features and designs.
  • Ensure development and implementation of components required for complex application features.
  • Direct corrective actions where performance falls below objectives.
  • Oversee all aspects of assigned projects, ensuring deadlines, deliverables, and reporting requirements are met.
  • Prepare regular status reports for senior management.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of experience as a Project Manager.
  • Familiarity with PMI’s project management framework and industry standards.
  • Ability to manage project charters, budgets, schedules, and scope effectively.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and resource management skills.
  • Experience supporting technical teams and coordinating across multiple stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional project management certification (e.g., PMP, CAPM).
  • Specific technical knowledge of PC, workstation, operating systems, applications, or platforms.
  • Experience working within government agencies or public sector environments.
  • Ability to work independently with self-direction, demonstrating problem-solving and risk management skills.
