Who You Are
The Mikisew Cree First Nation seeks a
temporary full-time Personal Support Worker (PSW) to provide high-quality care to residents at the Kahkiyow Keykanow Elders Care Home in Fort Chipewyan, Alberta. The PSW works under the supervision of the Manager of KKECH and collaborates with healthcare aides to support residents' physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional well-being. The PSW assists residents with daily living activities, maintains cleanliness of living spaces, promotes independence, and acts as a patient advocate facilitating communication among residents, families, and healthcare professionals. The position emphasizes teamwork and adherence to care plans and policies.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Working alongside Certified Health Care Aides (HCA) to enhance quality of life for the Residents in the Care Home.
- Assisting Residents in the performance of daily living activities.
- Provide high quality personal care services that are in accordance with individual care plans, policies, procedures and licensing.
- Strengthen the well-being (physical, mental, emotional and spiritual) of residents through positive interaction daily.
- Maintain Cleanliness of resident’s living spaces
- Maintain Confidentiality, always remain confidential as per signed form.
- Maintain the Employees Code of Conduct, no malicious talk, or circulating rumors of coworkers or employers.
- Teamwork with all co-workers
- Reporting must attend gatherings as requested by your manager and must be able to fill out a report if an incident has occurred during your shift.
- Work towards achieving the PSW/ HCA Certificate through Keyano College.
- Provide assistance using a cane or walker during transfer.
- Assist in ROM (Range of Motion) as needed by HCA.
- If Staff are available, may accompany Resident to healthcare appointments (no family availability)
- Guided by HCA (in person training) assist with showering of Resident.
- Guided by HCA (with in person training) such as assistance with personal care of Residents.
- Assist Residents with changing of clothing, washing up and toileting as needed.
- Monitor very closely confused residents with dementia, delirium or depicting aggressive behavior.
- Continuously refresh your skills through educational workshops and readings on medical issues and various impairments.
- No type of restraint is to be used on residents.
- Wear protective gear such as gloves, mask, gown if the resident is on any type of isolation and when assisting a Resident during specific tasks.
- Monitor Resident for prevention of falls.
- Respond to emergencies accordingly through guidance of HCA.
- Ask questions at staff meetings regarding safety concerns (If we don’t ask, we won’t know) Meals:
- Prepare and set dining room tables for upcoming meals.
- Work with HCA during mealtimes
- Monitor residents at all meal and snack times.
- Provide nourishment by refreshments to Residents throughout the day as needed
- Other Duties as required.
Qualifications
- Grade 10 or GED
- Immunization record required.
- Pass a criminal/vulnerable sector record check.
- Reliable, Punctual, Honest, Team player and Confidential.
- Must be in good health and have physical capabilities which are compatible with walking, bending, lifting and transferring residents.
- Able to be on your feet for long periods of time, as required.
- Must have the willingness to perform a variety of repetitive tasks, many of which may involve unpleasant conditions.
- Experience working with residents with mobility issues or the willingness to learn.
- Able to work shift work and sudden schedule change when required.
- Able to function under pressure and with minimal supervision at times.
