Ensures the City's vehicles and equipment are maintained in good working condition. Repairs and performs maintenance on mechanical and automotive equipment.

Mechanic

  • To identify the appropriate and most cost-efficient repair method and inspect and diagnose the condition of vehicles.

  • Transports vehicles of all types, including heavy vehicles.

  • Orders parts; picks up parts.

  • Performs troubleshooting in the field on emergency breakdown calls in order to minimize vehicle and customer downtime.

  • Performs brazing/cutting with torch and welding as required on vehicles, minimizing the cost of repairs.

  • Performs yearly state inspections in City vehicles; executes appropriate repairs as required to ensure a safe and efficient fleet.

  • Documents work in writing so that a maintenance/repair history of all active vehicles can be maintained.

  • Keeps tools, equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition, ensuring employee and customer safety.

  • Performs all job duties according to all approved safety rules and procedures.

  • Reports or corrects all unsafe practices or conditions they observe to their immediate supervisor.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Senior Mechanic

  • Performs maintenance and makes routine and specialized repairs on vehicles and equipment.

  • Test drives vehicles to identify problems and to determine if repairs have corrected the problem(s).

  • Operates equipment to identify problems and to determine if repairs have corrected the problem(s).

  • Inspect and diagnose the condition of vehicles; identify the appropriate and most cost-efficient repair method.

  • Performs troubleshooting on emergency breakdowns in the field to minimize vehicle and customer downtime.

  • Performs yearly state inspections in City vehicles; executes appropriate repairs to ensure a safe and efficient fleet.

  • Performs brazing/cutting and welding on vehicles, minimizing the cost of repairs.

  • Documents work in writing so that a maintenance/repair history of all active vehicles can be maintained. 

  • Keeps tools, equipment and work area in clean and orderly condition, ensuring employee and customer safety.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Master Mechanic

  • Performs specialized work and repairs on engines, carburetors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems and other complex vehicle components.

  • Disassembles, repairs, services, and reassembles, and reinstalls vehicle accessories and systems, including brakes, transmissions, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, cooling and radiator, air conditioning, suspension, vehicle generators, carburetors and fuel injection, starters and pumps.

  • Repairs heavy equipment specifically serviced by the service center.

  • Operates and uses acetylene torch and welding machines in the repair of equipment.

  • Performs yearly state inspections in City vehicles; executes appropriate repairs as required to ensure a safe and efficient fleet.

  • Test drive vehicles to identify problems and to determine if repairs have corrected the problem(s).

  • Designs, engineers and fabricates attachments and accessories for all departments.

  • Documents work in writing so that a maintenance/repair history of all active vehicles can be maintained.

  • Keeps tools, equipment and work area in clean and orderly conditions, ensuring employee and customer safety.

  • Performs all job duties according to all approved safety rules and procedures.

  • Reports or corrects all unsafe practices or conditions they observe to their immediate supervisor.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Mechanic

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High school graduate, or its equivalent, plus at least four (4) years of experience in general vehicle or equipment maintenance and repair, including one (1) year of experience in a specialized area. OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in servicing automobiles and other applicable equipment.

  • Fleet operations and services.

  • Various specialized types of vehicle diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools are used in vehicle repair and maintenance.

  • Applicable Federal, State and Local laws.

  • City practice, policy and procedures.

Skill in:

  • Operating heavy equipment.

  • Diagnosing problems and performing major and minor mechanical repairs.

  • Operating a variety of hand power tools.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Using computers and related software.

  • Reading and comprehending technical manuals.

  • Comprehending and following oral and written instructions.

  • Performing applicable calculations.

  • Evaluate conditions of vehicles and equipment; determine the most feasible and appropriate alternative for vehicles in need of major repair.

Senior Mechanic

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

High school diploma or equivalent.  Five (5) years of full-time experience in general vehicle or equipment maintenance and repair. One (1) year of the required experience must have been in a specialized equipment area; preferably John Deere. OR Any equivalent combination of experience and training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Specialized repairs to vehicles, equipment and Fire apparatus.

  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in servicing automobiles and other applicable equipment.

  • Fleet operations and services.

  • Various specialized types of vehicle diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools are used in vehicle repair and maintenance.

  • Federal, State and Local laws.

  • City practice, policy, and procedures.

  • Safety practices and procedures.

  • Operating heavy equipment.

Master Mechanic

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

Two-year accredited technical certificate in auto/truck/equipment repair or Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Automotive Technology. OR High school graduate with six (6) years of full-time increasingly responsible work experience in a fleet maintenance environment. One (1) year of welding experience.

One (1) additional year of work experience may be substituted for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.  OR Any combination of experience, training and/or education that provides the required knowledge, skills, or abilities.

Knowledge of:

  • Specialized repairs to vehicles, equipment and Fire apparatus.

  • Methods, equipment, and materials used in servicing automobiles and other applicable equipment.

  • Fleet operations and services.

  • Various specialized types of vehicle diagnostic testing and analysis equipment and tools used in vehicle repair and maintenance.

  • Federal, State and Local laws.

  • City practice, policy and procedures.

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Mechanic

  • Valid Class B Texas driver’s license or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

  • State of Texas Vehicle Inspection License (State Inspector) or must be obtained within six (6) months of employment.

Senior Mechanic

  • Valid Class B Texas driver’s license or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

  • State of Texas Vehicle Inspection License (State Inspector) or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.  Incumbent must have all four certifications in one of the tracks listed below:

  • Automotive: Suspension and Steering, Brakes, Electrical / Electronic System, Heating and Air Conditioning OR Medium / Heavy Truck: Brakes, Suspension and Steering, Electrical / Electronic System, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.

Master Mechanic

  • Valid Class B Texas driver’s license or must be obtained within 60 days of hire.

  • State of Texas Vehicle Inspection License (State Inspector) or must be obtained within 6 months of employment.

  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.  Incumbent must have a Master Technician status in one of the following certification tracks: ASE Master Automotive Technician OR ASE Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, reaching, handling, fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching, crawling, bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, vision, hearing, talking, use of foot controls.

Exposed to weather extremes, exhaust and gas fumes, loud noises/vibrations from engine motors and machinery, heat and/or steam from engines and chemicals.

HIRING RANGE:

Mechanic: $21.26 - $26.63, hourly.

Senior Mechanic: $24.61 - $30.83, hourly.

Master Mechanic: $27.13 - $33.98, hourly.
