What You’ll Do (organized by responsibility area)
1. Operational Support & Escalation
- Act as the escalation point for network-related tickets from the Service Desk.
- Troubleshoot and resolve L1–L2 networking incidents (connectivity issues, switch port problems, VLAN/basic DHCP/DNS issues).
- Communicate incident status and basic remediation steps to affected users and stakeholders.
- Follow existing change-control procedures for any network work you perform.
2. Cabling & Physical Infrastructure
- Pull, terminate, label, and test copper and fiber cabling for office and warehouse drops.
- Build and maintain patch panels, organize racks, and keep network closets to company standards.
- Perform moves/adds/changes (MACs) for ports and cabling as requested.
- Complete on-site installation tasks that are hands-on in nature (ladders/scissor lifts only with required training).
3. Network Monitoring & Basic Operations
- Monitor alerts from network monitoring tools and triage issues; escalate to Senior Network Engineer as appropriate.
- Perform basic switch/port troubleshooting and cable qualification (e.g., continuity, tone, basic link testing).
- Assist with scheduled maintenance windows as an operational resource (e.g., port changes, simple firmware updates when documented and approved).
4. Documentation, Inventory & Standards
- Maintain accurate port mappings, patch panel documentation, and closet labeling.
- Keep inventory of network hardware, cables, and spares; stage equipment for scheduled work.
- Ensure cabling and closet organization follow MPG standards.
5. Vendor / ISP Coordination & Site Readiness
- Coordinate with vendors and ISPs for scheduled installs, repairs, and cabling work.
- Accept and stage equipment deliveries; verify basic completeness of shipments.
- Prepare network closets/drops for site moves and small build-outs (physical readiness rather than design).
6. User Support & Onboarding/Offboarding
- Ensure new hires and site moves have working network drops and wireless access as configured by policies.
- Decommission network ports and document removals during offboarding.
7. Security & Compliance (supportive)
- Follow company security policies when handling credentials and device access.
- Assist with basic segmentation or access tasks under Senior Network Engineer direction (e.g., guest Wi-Fi on approved VLANs).
