The Regional Transportation Agency (RTA) manages and operates public transportation in Anne Arundel County, Howard County, northern Prince George’s County, and the City of Laurel. The RTA employs 150 administrative and operational staff out of our Annapolis-Junction location.
JOB DESCRIPTION
RTA is actively seeking an ASE Master-certified Maintenance Technician/Bus Mechanic for our fleet of transit, medium duty buses and service vehicles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
- Demonstrates behaviors that are consistent with standards for professional and ethical conduct.
- Inspects, troubleshoots, services and/or repairs transit vehicles and related mechanical equipment.
- Troubleshoot, remove, clean, repair, reinstall and adjust vehicle components:
- Engine, fuel, and emission components
- Driveline components including transmissions and drive axles.
- Electrical/electronic components/sensors
- Brakes/suspension/steering/exhaust
- Cab/chassis/w/c lifts
- Air systems
- A/C systems
- Ensure work orders are detailed and properly completed. Must be able to use the Company’s paperless maintenance management system.
- Select the most appropriate course of action for efficient, effective repairs using mechanical knowledge, diagnostic tools and equipment, gauges, micrometers and measuring devices and computerized diagnostic software.
- Evaluate completed work prior to release to ensure accuracy and sufficient detail.
- Ensure safe use of power and hand-held tools.
- Perform road calls and emergency services as needed.
- Move vehicles safely between the lot, shop and work areas.
- Communicate professionally with customers, team members and supervisors.
- Actively participate in safety or educational training as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Demonstrated experience monitoring and meeting preventive maintenance (PM) schedules and operating automotive repair shop equipment.
- Ability to work independently performing in-shop and over the road repairs.
- Ability to learn new technologies.
- Strong ability to use computerized diagnostic equipment, manufacturer and aftermarket diagnostic software, gauges, measuring devices, manuals and wiring schematics.
- Strong communication skills, bringing demonstrated abilities of building solid relationships with superiors, peers, and subordinates.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or GED.
- Master ASE Certification in Medium/Heavy Truck or Bus
- T1-T8 (Medium-Heavy Truck) or H1-H8 (Transit Bus)
- EPA 608 and 609 certifications
- A minimum of Ten (10) years of hands-on medium/heavy duty and/or transit repair experience.
- Keep current each ASE certification to maintain Master Technician status.
- Strong knowledge of electrical, computerized and mechanical systems.
- Strong knowledge of computer diagnostic equipment and computer skills.
- Candidates must be 21 years or older with a valid Class B or higher Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger (P) Endorsement and No Airbrakes (L) Restriction; and an excellent driving record.
- Acquire and maintain a Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Card)
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions:
This position typically requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions, and using tools and equipment that require a high degree of manual dexterity. Must be able to lay on back on a creeper to work underneath vehicles.
This position is safety sensitive and subject to RTA’s Drug & Alcohol Program. This is a bargaining unit position.
Heavy Work: Incumbent will be required to perform heavy manual labor, occasionally lifting and maneuvering materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Work Environment:
Work is performed both in a shop environment and outside in various weather conditions including exposure to extreme heat, cold, rain and snow. Incumbents work is performed around equipment and machinery with moving parts and under wet and slippery conditions. Incumbents are exposed daily to electrical hazards, vibrations, chemicals, workspace restrictions, dirt, grease, oil, dust, fumes, smoke, and gases and are intermittently exposed to intense noise levels. Must wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times while in shop areas.
