Description

  

Coordinate needs for the volunteer department with an emphasis on the technical aspects and logistics. Develop and support on-boarding and training of new volunteers including the teen program. Ensure program excellence is met at all levels while promoting and implementing the mission, values, and philosophy of the Desert Botanical Garden and its education department.


Essential Duties

Volunteer Scheduling and Operational Support

  • Assist with logistics and preparation for volunteer training sessions.
  • Oversee materials preparation and management for interpretive programs.
  • Support volunteer shift communication and scheduling, to ensure a high percentage of volunteer shifts are filled.
  • Serve as volunteer staff liaison for Garden-wide events and festivals, gathering information from necessary departments and disseminating shift details to all volunteers registered for a specific shift.
  • Identify weekly independent continuing education opportunities for the volunteer newsletter.

Volunteer Development

  • Support on-boarding process for new volunteers, and existing volunteers taking on new roles within the Garden.
  • Observe and document feedback regarding effectiveness of both individual volunteers and collective programs
  • Support growth and development of teen volunteer programs.
  • Participate in department and Garden staff meetings, planning teams, and events. Perform other duties as assigned by the Program Director Volunteer Services or the Volunteer Program Specialist.

Hourly Pay Rate - $20.00/Hr


Requirements

  

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or related work experience. 
  • Minimum three years’ experience in volunteer services or related field working with volunteers.
  • High-level computer competency including database management skills
  • Excellent communication, social and organizational skills; ability to solve problems using discretion and good judgment.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and outdoors when needed.

Typical office equipment.


Internal Communication

Frequent communication with Garden staff and volunteers.


External Communication

Limited.


Working Conditions

The Volunteer Operations Coordinator will spend time working in both indoors and outdoors environments, including working outdoors over the summer during Flashlight Nights. Some of this role will potentially be subject to extreme weather.

Potential for tight deadlines or time periods of high workload may require additional hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal.


Must be able to walk, sit, stand, stoop, kneel, bend, see, hear, speak, read, and type. Manual dexterity and the ability to lift up to 10 pounds required.
