About the Department
The Lansing Police Department is excited to announce an opening for a Social Worker that would love to join their professional team. This is a great opportunity for Social Workers seeking to use their extensive knowledge and experience to provide advocacy, outreach and supportive services to the Lansing population by connecting them with community resources as they focus on being productive citizens.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS & TRAINING: Failure to obtain or maintain job required qualifications will result in appropriate action consistent with the provision of the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement or Personnel Rules
- Must be able to be placed under the terms of the City of Lansing’s blanket bond
- Must not have pending or having been convicted of any felony charges and pass a criminal history record check
- Must pass an extensive background investigation that may cover review of attended schools and employment records, home environment, and personal traits and integrity
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: The City of Lansing reserves the right to utilize equivalencies where deemed appropriate with regard to education and experience requirements
- Master's Degree in Social Work
- Must be licensed by the State of Michigan as a Limited License Master’s Social Worker (LLMSW) or Licensed Master’s Social Worker (LMSW).
- 2 to 5 years’ experience as a Social Worker with Police/Community Relations preferred
- 2 years’ experience engaging with people who have mental illness, behavioral or emotional health concerns, substance use concerns, are homeless, are survivors of traumatic experiences and/or violent crime preferred
- Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License
PHYSICAL CAPACITY REQUIREMENTS :This position requires the individual through assistance or on their own to hear, speak, and have finger dexterity and visual acuity.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF POSITION: Office and field work using vehicle to visit and meet with individuals. Will be required to work a variation of hours between 6am-6pm.
ESSENTIAL POSITION FUCTIONS: The essential position functions listed below do not include all functions which may be found in the position as duties and responsibilities may be added, deleted or modified at any time.
Represent the City of Lansing working with a variety of different populations and local agencies.
- Provide needs, risks, and mental status assessments, engage in crisis intervention techniques, and refer and connect citizens to appropriate services agencies.
- Engage with people who experience such concerns as homelessness, food insecurity, job insecurity, mental illness, behavioral and emotional health issues, substance use concerns, trauma/violence, among others.
- Engage in strengths based and self-determination principles to help citizens meet their individual goals when appropriate.
- Act as a liaison between the Lansing Police Department, other community agencies, and citizens.
