Job summary
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Programs oversees staff that support distinct programs, including classes, volunteers, events, Team Builds and private workshops, youth programs, and community programs. As part of the Leadership Team, this position is responsible for the overall vision of each program, including developing and meeting strategic goals, identifying areas of growth, overseeing budgets, and supporting staff. Together, we work as a team to advance our mission of making the industrial arts accessible to all, regardless of income. Our ideal candidate for this role has direct experience with both program administration and budgeting and with the industrial arts.
Responsibilities
Scheduled Programming and Faculty Support
- Be the lead point of contact with department heads and faculty
- Work with department heads to plan, manage, schedule, and staff our educational programs, including classes, workshops, and off-site activities.
- Recruit and retain department heads and faculty aligned with the core mission of The Crucible as an industrial arts school and arts community.
- Support Programs team with student and registration needs.
- Ensure classes and programs offer exceptional user experience, quality instruction, measurable learning, and skills building, so that all students feel seen, welcome, and comfortable.
- Support professional development and a welcoming environment that makes The Crucible more inclusive of local Oakland residents, local communities of color, women, and LGBTQIA+ folks.
Team Build and Private Workshops, Volunteer Programs and Outreach Events
- Scale up our Team Build and private workshops
- Oversee and support our active volunteer program, working with staff to develop and implement strategies to improve recruitment, retention, volunteer data tracking, and communication between departments.
- Co-curate planning, logistics, day-of coordination, and artist selection for key events and programs such as GIFTY, Open Houses, and artists talks.
- Oversee budgets related to volunteer programs and non-fundraising events. .
Youth, Community and Workforce/Entrepreneurship programs
- Design, implement and execute classes, camps, workshops and funded programs for young people ages 8-18 that support both hands-on social/emotional learning and career pathways.
- Develop, execute, assess and improve community programs that provide valuable arts and career pathway experiences, especially for our Oakland neighbors and for BIPOC families and individuals.
- Support outreach to local schools and community groups, and maintain partnerships around existing and future programs
- Oversee and develop relationships with Bay area artists, makers, and educators to support arts inclusion and entrepreneurship, including public art projects and workforce development programs.
Finances and fundraising
- Manage budgets, work with the Executive Director and CFO to manage revenue goals, and develop data-driven recommendations.
- Analyze and contrast earned income potential for Crucible programs, which include: youth summer and spring camps, adult classes, team building/workshop activities, facility rentals, workforce development, and events.
- Lead and manage department budgets, revenue goals, and revenue projections
- Work with marketing/ecommerce to drive sales and outreach for classes and programs.
- Work with the Development Team to identify and reach fundraising goals to support low- and no-cost community programming.
- Work with our Salesforce Admin and lead team to analyze class interest, sales, and performance.
Requirements
The ideal candidate is a fast-paced, well-organized, problem-solver with a resilient temperament who has the desire to build a collaborative and inclusive culture among arts workers and learners. A passion for community empowerment, community economic development, and personal expression through the arts, a commitment to developing staff skills and talents, and the ability to manage change, will make this role successful. This position requires some on-site evening, night, and weekend work, including program supervision during Spring and Summer holidays. Background as an industrial artist desirable!
The successful candidate should have a minimum of five years of relevant program management experience as a creative lead in an execution-based setting -- preferably with an established arts education non-profit organization or equivalent setting
- Personal maker, creative or artistic practice a plus
- Experience developing and managing budgets, as well as hitting revenue goals
- Management or coaching experience, ideally with teams of creative personalities with a wide range of experience
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects
- Works effectively under pressure, reacts quickly, and meets tight deadlines
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback
- Strong personal values around deep listening, authenticity, and integrity
- Familiar with Oakland and engaged in the Oakland community in some way
- Approaches work with an equity and inclusion lens
- Proficient with email, Google Drive/G Suite tools, and Excel
- Experience with Salesforce or other CRM a strong plus
- Comfortable with a metrics-driven approach to evaluation
- Ability to lift 35 pounds, current valid CA driver’s license, and ability to drive a car, if needed

The annual salary range is $75,000-$90,000, depending on experience.
