Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Medical Genetics
The UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is seeking a APP or a Physician Assistant who will provide direct patient care to infants, children, and adults in the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics, with an emphasis on individuals with known or suspected inborn errors of metabolism (e.g. phenylketonuria, galactosemia, MCAD deficiency, Fabry disease, metachromatic leukodystrophy). This will include conducting comprehensive health history and physical assessments, establishing medical diagnoses, ordering and interpreting diagnostic studies, performing necessary procedures, and developing treatment plans. The APP will also have opportunities to provide inpatient and telehealth consultations regarding these disorders and to lead quality improvement initiatives and contribute to international rare disease registries. The APP/PA will work in collaboration with attending physicians, while exercising autonomy within their scope of practice, as outlined by applicable state law, regulations, institutional policies and practice agreements to provide excellent clinical care for patients in the medical genetics ambulatory clinics.
Duties to include:
· • Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate healthcare for infants, children, and adults seen within the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
• Perform medical diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications used in medical genetics within their scope of practice as described in state and federal laws, including, but not limited to, the following:
o Obtain complete medical and family histories
o Order and interpret diagnostic imaging and biochemical and genetic testing
o Manage infusion therapies
o Perform punch skin biopsies for diagnostic testing
o Access implanted devices (including intravenous, intrathecal, and intracerebroventricular) for the administration of medications
o Manage and provide expanded access (compassionate use) therapies
o Obtain informed consent and collect clinical data for rare disease registries
o Provide genetic counseling and education to patients and families
• Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.
• Obtain prior authorizations as required for testing, medications, and other services.
• Collaborate/consult in the optimization of care delivery through coordination and transitions of care as a part of a team.
• Accurately and appropriately complete timely documentation of patient care in the electronic medical record (EMR) and other records for compliance, billing and other regulatory standards.
• Provide health education to patients and families; participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
• Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise, and to external agencies, community and other health professionals.
• Follow prescribed practices in communicating and elevating any quality and patient safety concerns.
• Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
• Participate in own professional development by maintaining required competencies, certifying body renewals, seeking educational offerings when available, and participates in the professional development of others, which may include APP students, Residents and Medical Students. Acts as a preceptor/mentor for those new in the department.
• Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
• Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.
• Function as an independent practitioner within guidelines of the collaborative practice agreement, Iowa Board of Nursing or Iowa Board of Physician Assistants, and UI Health standards.
• May perform other duties, as assigned.

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner:
Education Required Qualifications
• A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
• A current RN license from the State of Iowa is required
• Current certification as a *** family nurse practitioner (FNP) and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
Physician Assistant (PA):
• Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which includes graduation from an accredited PA education program and/or certification by the NCCPA.

Required Qualifications
- • National certification as ***FNP or PA (national exam) is required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are required.
• Demonstrated experience in pediatrics or knowledge of pediatric patient care is required.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a group setting.
• Demonstrated clinical experience in the practice of pediatrics is required.
Desirable Qualifications
- • Knowledge and experience in medical genetics and inborn errors of metabolism, including aminoacidopathies, fatty acid oxidation disorders, and lysosomal disorders.
• Experience working in an outpatient setting and as a member of an interdisciplinary health care team.
• Experience participating in clinical research.

Pediatrics will be filling this position at one of two levels. The Physician Assistant classification salary range is $ $87,632 -$158,296, and the Adanced Registered Nurse Practitioner salary range is $87,632 -$158,296. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (PA/ARNP) you wish to be considered for or indicate both. See required qualifications for additional information.
