About the Department

This is an Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current vacancies and any future vacancies. Successful candidates are expected to work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months a year. Incumbents in this position are expected to  a variety of general maintenance and custodial duties related to installing, maintaining, and repairing District facilities.

GENERAL PURPOSE
  
 Under general supervision, performs a variety of general maintenance and custodial duties related to installing, maintaining, and repairing District facilities; performs a variety of duties to ensure that buildings, lockers, carpet, furniture, and rooms are maintained in a clean and orderly manner and in proper operating condition; and performs related duties as assigned.
  
 DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
  
 Utility Worker is distinguished from Custodian I and Custodian II classifications in that a Utility Worker performs a wide variety of diversified duties including basic maintenance repair work, custodial, and grounds maintenance.  Custodian I and Custodian II classifications perform routine and daily custodial and janitorial work in addition to basic maintenance. 

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  
 The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
  

  1. Performs a variety of general maintenance and custodial duties related to installation, maintenance, and repair of District facilities.
      
  2. Installs, repairs, or replaces lockers; cuts, glues, repairs, and replaces carpet; repairs lights and miscellaneous door hardware.
      
  3. Assembles and repairs furniture; adjusts, installs, and transports portable walls, partitions, and furniture.
      
  4. Drives a District vehicle to transport equipment, furniture, and various supplies within the District and to and from vendors; loads and unloads items from delivery vehicles; drives a vehicle to transport refuse to dump grounds.
      
  5. Performs custodial duties as assigned; strips and waxes gymnasium floors; uses waxing and buffing machines to coat and seal floors; uses wet vacuums and other supplies to clean up spills and water.
      
  6. Receives, unloads, and distributes supplies, equipment and furniture; inscribes with identifying codes as assigned.
      
  7. Communicates with staff, administrators, vendors, and others regarding general maintenance and custodial needs.
      
  8. Operates a variety of tools, machinery, and equipment including vehicles, lifts, floor machines, manual pallet jacks, carpet extractors and related tools, two-way radios, paint sprayers, furniture-moving equipment, and a variety of power and hand tools.
      
  9. Reports repair and maintenance needs to proper maintenance personnel and assists District maintenance personnel as assigned.
      
  10. Directs and controls traffic in and out of parking lots and assures the security of parked vehicles.
      
  11. Sets up meeting rooms, classrooms, and other school facilities for special events and meetings as assigned.
      
  12. Maintains various tools and equipment used in the course of work in a clean, orderly, and proper working condition.
      
  13. Prepares and lines athletic fields for practice and competition; assures boundaries are accurately and properly lined; sprays for pest control as assigned.
      
  14. Works on rooftops, as required.

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  
 Knowledge of:
  

  1. Methods, equipment, and materials used in general maintenance work.
      
  2. Methods of cleaning and preserving floors, walls, and fixtures.
      
  3. Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
      
  4. Cleaning materials, disinfectant, and equipment used in custodial work.
      
  5. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies.
      
  6. Safe operation and use of hand and power tools and equipment.
      
  7. Basic record-keeping techniques.
      
 Ability to:
  
  1. Perform general maintenance and repair on District furniture, buildings, fixtures, and facilities.
      
  2. Safely operate tools and equipment used in general maintenance work.
      
  3. Maintain classrooms, offices, and other school facilities in a clean, safe and secure condition.
      
  4. Use specialized cleaning equipment and supplies safely and efficiently.
      
  5. Move and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and special events.
      
  6. Observe and report safety hazards and need for maintenance and repair.
      
  7. Perform minor maintenance and repair on furniture, equipment, and facilities.
      
  8. Meet schedules and time lines.
      
  9. Work independently with little direction.
      
  10. Work cooperatively with others.
      
  11. Observe health and safety regulations.
      
  12. Understand and follow oral and written directions.
      
  13. Maintain routine records related to work performed.
      
  14. Perform heavy physical labor.
      
  15. Use work ladders safely.
 
 Education, Training, and Experience:

  
  • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalent, or higher education; and
 
  • One (1) one year of custodial or general maintenance experience.
 
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
  
  • A valid California Driver License.
      
  • Valid automobile liability insurance coverage.
 
 PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS
  
 Listed below are examples of the physical aspects that this classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
  
  • Lift, carry, push, pull, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, walk, run, and crawl.
  • Perform moderate to heavy physical exertion.
  • Lift and maneuver 50 pounds.
  • Carry 25 pounds.
  • Reach in all directions.
  • Stand, sit and walk for extended periods of time.
  • Work in indoor or outdoor environment, with possible dry, hot, cold, and wet weather.
  • Work at different District sites of various configurations and sizes.
  • Safely handle objects weighing up to 100 lbs. in teams or using specialized equipment.
