TITLE: Development Director 

REPORTS TO: Senior Development Officer

SALARY RANGE: $70,000 - $90,000 (exempt position) based upon qualifications and experience

 

Organization Overview

We are seeking a dynamic Development Director to join our growing $2M organization and lead our comprehensive fundraising efforts. This strategic leadership role will work closely with our Board of Directors to expand revenue streams and build lasting relationships within our community.

 

Position Summary

The Development Director will be responsible for planning, implementing, and managing all aspects of our fundraising program. This role requires a seasoned professional who can cultivate major gift prospects, secure grant funding, execute successful events, and build meaningful relationships that advance our mission and ensure long-term sustainability.

 

Key Responsibilities

Revenue Generation

· Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies to meet annual revenue goals

· Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors ($1,000+)

· Research and pursue grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government sources

· Write compelling grant proposals and manage all aspects of the grant lifecycle

· Plan and execute annual gala and other fundraising events

· Create and manage donor acquisition and retention programs

 

Relationship Development & Management

· Build and maintain strong relationships with current and prospective donors

· Work closely with Board of Directors to leverage their networks and expertise

· Cultivate partnerships with foundations, corporations, and community leaders

· Develop and implement donor stewardship programs to ensure high retention rates

· Represent the organization at community events and networking opportunities

Strategic Planning & Board Collaboration

· Partner with the Board of Directors on fundraising strategy and goal setting

· Prepare board members for fundraising activities and donor visits

· Present regular reports on development activities, metrics, and outcomes to the Board

· Support board recruitment efforts by identifying potential members with fundraising capacity

· Collaborate with Board committees, particularly Development/Fundraising committees

 

Database Management & Analysis

· Maintain a comprehensive donor database and ensure data integrity

· Track and analyze fundraising metrics to inform strategy and decision-making

· Prepare detailed reports on campaign progress, donor trends, and ROI

· Manage donor communication and acknowledgment systems

 

Communications & Marketing

· Work with the communications team to develop compelling case statements and materials

· Oversee creation of fundraising collateral, proposals, and presentations

Coordinate marketing efforts to ensure consistent messaging

· Manage donor newsletters and other stewardship communications

 

Qualifications

Required Experience & Skills

· Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred

· Minimum 5-7 years of progressive fundraising experience in nonprofit organizations

· Proven track record of securing major gifts ($10,000+) and grants

· Experience planning and executing special events, including galas

· Strong relationship-building and interpersonal communication skills

· Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

· Experience working with volunteer boards and committees

· Proficiency in donor database management systems (CRM experience preferred)

· Knowledge of fundraising best practices and ethical standards

 

Preferred Qualifications

· CFRE (Certified Fundraising Executive) certification

· Experience with planned giving programs

· Knowledge of the foundation and corporate giving landscape

· Experience with capital campaigns

· Background in volunteer management

· Familiarity with wealth screening and prospect research tools

 

Reporting Structure

This position reports directly to the Foundation President and works closely with the Board of Directors and Resource Development Committee.
