Discovery Chemistry is an integral andgrowing part of the Janssen Discovery, Product Development & Supply (DPDS)group, which is committed to the delivery of high-quality drug candidates inpartnership with all six Therapeutic Area (TA) discovery organizations. We are seeking an experienced, highly skilled, andmotivated chemist with excellent organicsynthesis and medicinal chemistry expertise to lead small molecule drugdiscovery programs and advance them toward the clinic.  Thisposition will require the candidate to possess and leverage deep knowledge andcapabilities to deliver differentiated clinical candidates to the Janssenproduct development pipeline within our Disease and Pathway Area Stronghold(DAS and PAS) strategy.  Using a mix of internal and external resources,the Principal Scientist will partner with key stakeholders in the TAs and otherinternal groups, represent medicinal chemistry, lead cross-functional projectteams, and be co-responsible for building, managing, and delivering highquality clinical molecules. 

 
Responsibilities of the Principal Scientist will include:
  • As a dynamic project leader,drive and direct medicinal chemistry functions for one or more drug discoveryprojects, working in concert with partners in molecular and cellular biology,pharmacology, computational chemistry, ADME, structural biology, chemicaldevelopment, and other key functions
  • Work collaboratively with otherJanssen drug discovery sites, including Boston, MA, La Jolla, CA, South SanFrancisco, CA, and Beerse, Belgium, and with Johnson & Johnson InnovationCenters worldwide
  • Analyze screening data, performliterature reviews, design, propose, and execute medicinal chemistry plans,coordinate chemistry and biology data to support compound progression andpatent strategies
  • Provide scientific direction andleadership for synthetic and medicinal chemistry activities of internal FTEs
  • Supervise and direct syntheticchemistry activities at contract research organizations (CROs)
  • Participate in portfolio andstage-gate reviews, lead the preparation and presentation of dossiers forclinical candidate nomination and compound advancement
  • Participate in shaping andimplementing strategies that support medicinal chemistry growth objectives atJanssen
  • Serve as a scientific expert inmedicinal chemistry with both internal and external partners and providerecommendations regarding new targets and emerging external opportunities
  • Ensure optimalinteraction/communication and provide updates on project status to drugdiscovery leadership
  • Maintain a significant level of productivity in thelaboratory setting
