About the Department
POSITION SUMMARY:
The incumbent is under the supervision of the Division Chief and/or the Fire Chief. Expectations are to have a knowledge of heavy equipment and general maintenance of that equipment, required for day-to-day operations depending on scope of work and/or project type. Operate fire apparatus, water tender, and heavy equipment such as large bulldozers, graders, excavators, backhoe, skid-trac loader and brushing equipment, transports, trucks, and other types of equipment used in the fire control and maintenance of dozer line, fire roads, fire breaks, Wildland Urban Interface work, and trails. Minor mechanical work and repairs may also be required.
Position Duties
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Perform repair work and maintenance of fire apparatus, water tender, and heavy equipment.
2. Perform repair and servicing in the field.
3. Assist the Heavy Equipment Mechanic in performing shop maintenance and repair work.
4. Supervise, instruct, and work with firefighters in servicing equipment.
5. May be required to perform fire-fighting duties or Wildland Interface Crew work when not assigned to heavy equipment.
6. Responsible for learning basic terminology, safe work practices, methods, techniques, policies, and procedures needed to carry out fundamental tasks in fire, and fuels management.
7. Will be operating heavy equipment (brushers, graders, excavators and/or bulldozers) in a forested terrain. At times equipment operations may be required on steep slopes and rough topography.
8. Will be responsible for daily maintenance of heavy equipment (i.e., scheduling refueling, maintaining hydraulic fluid levels, greasing, and helping realign tracks, hammering out dents and minor mechanical work).
9. May be required to do some on-the-ground investigating as part of the pre-work.
10. Keep required records and logs.
11. Prepares and submits required reports.
12. All positions in the Fire Department are required to maintain availability for after-hours fire dispatches both on and off the reservation lasting up to 14 days. May be assigned to other resource management activities such as recreation, timber, or reforestation when not performing fire or fuels management duties.
13. Assess and implement goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
1. G8: Bachelor’s degree in related field with one year job specified experience.
2. G9: Bachelor's degree in related field with two years job specified experience.
3. Employee must be willing to acquire any special certifications or attend any training that is determined to be relevant or becomes required of the position in the future.
4. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Basic wildland firefighter course (Basic 32).
2. Two years’ experience operating a D-5 or larger dozer with tracks and operating and driving a wide load transport while performing pioneer heavy equipment operations for forestry services, logging companies, or industries where construction work involves pioneer excavation and trail blazing.
3. Experience in safe work practices.
4. Ability to follow verbal and written directions.
5. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
6. Recognition that in order to serve Yurok People one must know as much as possible about Yurok history, culture and values.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
