The City of Pasadena's Department of Transportation is seeking an Associate Planner (Transportation) for the Community Mobility Section of the Multimodal Planning Division. Under general supervision, the Associate Planner (Transportation) manages and completes on-going projects and assignments related to transportation and safety improvements. The Community Mobility Section is responsible for implementing the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program, traffic calming efforts, education and awareness programs, implementing the Pedestrian Transportation Action Plan and the Bicycle Transportation Action Plan, the update of the Citywide Active Transportation Plan, and managing the active transportation program. This section plays a key role in supporting the update of the City’s Mobility Element of the General Plan including policy development and implementation.
The ideal candidate will be a technical expert in their field, with a focus on transportation planning. The successful candidate will have recent exposure on a diverse range of multi-modal transportation projects and should demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills, problem solving and critical thinking skills, be a team player, possess good customer service skills, have the ability to present recommendations to groups, take initiative, and have a strong work ethic. Collaboration across sections of the Department is a must.
Position Duties

- Under direct supervision from the Senior Planner, the Associate Planner will perform a variety of professional planning work in the Multimodal Planning Division of the Department of Transportation to implement Mobility Improvement Projects.
- Possess substantial knowledge of federal and state guidelines and requirements related to transportation planning.
- Project management for multimodal transportation, transportation safety, and traffic management projects.
- Assists in the development of transportation plans and conceptual designs for multimodal projects that would include bicycle facilities and pedestrian focused enhancements.
- Implements a Safe System Approach to traffic safety with the goal reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
- Implements projects funded through the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) Measure R, Multi-Subregional Program and Measure M funding.
- Engages in robust community outreach.
- Presents findings and data in presentations to government stakeholders and at neighborhood meetings.
- Grant writing and subsequent administration of grant-funded projects for various transportation and traffic safety related improvements.
- Works effectively with other departments, particularly the Public Works and Planning Department.
- Prepares requests for proposals and evaluate proposals.
- Communicates effectively with council office representatives and the public.
- Prepares agenda reports and provide presentations to commissions, committees, and City Council.
- Monitors community needs, division resources, legislative mandates, and grant-funded requirements.
- Represents the department at City Council meetings, committee hearings and with other City, state, and federal bodies.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum qualifications
- Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance. Example combinations include bachelor's degree in planning, architecture, geography, public administration, or a closely related field and
- Two years of increasingly responsible experience in transportation planning.
Desired qualifications
- Master's degree in planning, engineering, or a closely related field.
- American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
- Experience working in the public sector.
- Project management experience.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process will consist of any combination of training and experience evaluation, Subject Matter Expert (SME) review, an oral panel interview, and a department-level interview.
