About the Department

This role will take place at various City of Hillsboro Middle Schools. You will be meeting new people and building relationships with School District members, you will also help provide Sports instruction and leadership focused recreation level skills for youth (12-14 aged) at Middle School locations in Hillsboro. 

This position is working as a sports coach (Variety of sports throughout the school year) in a after school setting (3:30p to 5:30p) for middle school aged participants. There are three sessions a year, 7 weeks long.  

Sport Coaching Programs include:
  • Coaching Soccer
  • Coaching Volleyball
  • Coaching Basketball

The Ideal Candidate:
  • Someone who is outgoing, likes working with a team, is patient and understanding of middle school aged students. 
  • Able to communicate with staff, students and parents. 
  • Able to take lesson plans and implement them. 
  • Has skills in conflict management;
  • Time management;
  • is Organized;
  • Has excellent communication skills.

This position is responsible for lesson plans, coordinating with staff, communicating with Supervisor and parents, and ensuring program runs with the goals and objectives set.

The principal function of an employee in this class is to plan, organize, and coordinate the implementation of structured recreational classes and activities. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of an assigned supervisor, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. This class performs lead worker duties over assigned subordinate recreation personnel.  This class is distinguished from the class of Recreation Instructor II by additional responsibility involved in recreational program planning and coordination. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, program participants, and the general public.  The principal duties of this class are performed in a recreational facility.  This is a non-exempt position.

Example of Duties

• Instructs assigned recreational programs, including creating lesson plans, preparing materials and facilities, cleaning facilities after programs, and leading activities such as group time, art, music, games, and physical and socialization activities;
• Develops ideas for recreation classes, including researching programs, formulating ideas, and creatingpresenting proposal(s) to Recreation Coordinator;
• Performs various clerical duties, including working with receptionist, helping customers, answering phones, communicating program information to parents, participants, and the general public, and processing registration forms;
 
• Works with Recreation Coordinator, including supervising recreation aides, maintaining class records, and enforcing rules and regulations to ensure safety of participants;

• Serves as a lead worker in an assigned work group, including instructing and directing the work of assigned subordinate recreation personnel;
• Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees;
• Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
• Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
• Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
• Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED; and

• At least 6 months experience in a child development, working with youth or participating in sports, or day care related field; or

• Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

• Ability to attend work on a regular, predictable basis as scheduled.

Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
