This internship offers a unique, year-long experience designed to build strong scientific foundations for students. Interns will develop their understanding of key scientific concepts, gain the ability to critically review scientific literature, and acquire hands-on training in performing sophisticated laboratory experiments.

The curriculum is structured in progressive stages to ensure continuous learning and increasing responsibility throughout the internship.

Internship Curriculum

Month 1:

  • Training on core concepts relevant to the lab (e.g., the cre-lox system, the purpose of various mouse models, and the theory behind techniques such as PCR, histology, RNA sequencing, flow cytometry, and phenotype analysis).

  • Focus on best lab practices and lab safety.

Month 2:

  • Paired with an experienced lab member to assist on a project.

  • Literature review of relevant research papers with guided discussions.

  • Hands-on training in pipetting and reagent handling.

  • Completion of a skills proficiency test.

Months 3–6:

  • Continued project assistance.

  • Training in advanced techniques such as histology cutting, immunohistochemistry, quantitative PCR, flow cytometry, and cell culturing.

  • Ongoing literature review and knowledge-building in the assigned project area.

Months 7–9:

  • Ongoing project work.

  • Presentation on contributions to experiments and their significance.

  • Leadership of a “journal club” presentation to explain and discuss a research paper related to their project.

Months 9–12:

  • Continued project assistance.

  • Data compilation and analysis of experimental results.

  • Final presentation to the lab highlighting contributions, results, and significance of findings.

  • Leadership of an additional “journal club” presentation.


Required Education & Experience

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.

  • Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the appointment.

  • Interns: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the full duration of the internship.

  • Visitors: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
