We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Launch Coxswain to take command of pilot launches, supporting the Port’s pilotage service and fulfilling the statutory duties of the Harbour Authority.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the launch and all lifesaving appliances are maintained in good working order.
- Safely convey pilots and authorised personnel as directed by the Harbour Master or Pilot Desk.
- Undertake escort patrol duties as instructed.
- Maintain the vessel in a clean and serviceable condition, carrying out minor maintenance as needed.
- Report major defects promptly to VTS Watch Manager and in writing to the Deputy Harbour Master.
- Supervise the deckhand, ensuring duties are performed in line with pilotage service requirements.
- Participate in training as directed to maintain competence in line with current regulations.
- Stay up to date with professional standards, including M Notices and Local Notices to Mariners for the Solent.
- Carry out any other duties reasonably required within the scope of the role.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Proven command experience with small inshore craft (minimum Advanced Powerboat + Commercial Endorsement).
- Working knowledge of Central and Eastern Solent and Southampton Water.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Experience supervising a small team.
- Team-oriented with a proactive approach to safety and service delivery.
Shift pattern: 2 days, 2 nights, 4 days off — repeated for 5 cycles, followed by 14 days off
