The Custodial Coordinator plays a key part in supporting the daily operations of the Environmental Services (EVS) team by working alongside frontline staff to uphold the highest standards of cleanliness, sanitation, and facility presentation across the campus. This position serves as a working coordinator, actively participating in cleaning and maintenance tasks while also providing on-the-ground guidance, resource coordination, and real-time support to team members. They help ensure smooth daily logistics, support project execution, and reinforce quality goals set by the EVS Manager. As a bridge between staff and leadership, the coordinator fosters a positive, team-oriented culture by modeling professionalism, promoting accountability, and encouraging continuous improvement.
- Schedule Availability: 1:30 pm to 10:00 pm, five days a week, including both weekend nights.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership Support
- Support the EVS Manager by coordinating daily tasks and projects, ensuring consistent execution of cleanliness, sanitation, and presentation standards across all indoor and outdoor campus facilities.
- Oversee and engage the team through regular meetings to align departmental goals, communicate updates to policies and procedures, and provide hands-on support and training.
- Deliver real-time feedback and document performance observations; proactively identify growth opportunities and support staff development through mentoring and continuous guidance.
- Foster a united, safety-conscious, and service-driven team culture by modeling professionalism, accountability, and a commitment to excellence.
- Conduct daily inspections to ensure compliance with operational standards and efficient use of personnel, materials, and equipment.
Custodial
- Perform daily tasks that include cleaning and sanitizing all assigned cleanable surfaces, including but not limited to vacuuming, dusting, sweeping, mopping, polishing floor surfacing, and emptying waste for offices and facilities.
- Stock restrooms, supply closets, and work with the EVS Manager to maintain inventories.
- Pick up litter and debris throughout the zoo.
Collaboration
- In the absence of the EVS Manager, assign and direct the work of EVS Technicians and coordinate with the Director of Campus Services.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure that all zoo guest events outside of normal operations receive the required services from EVS to provide superior experiences.
- Assist the Grounds team with minor/major projects as directed.
- Participate in snow removal operations and are available to work a variable schedule, including early hours, weekends, and occasional holidays, in an on-call status for snow removal.
- Demonstrate a commitment to DZCA Occupational Health, Safety, and Sustainability Policies by adhering to all environmental, safety, & health regulations, procedures, and goals.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Other assistance, as designated by Campus Management leadership, to support the overall goals of the department and organization. DZCA retains the right to add or change duties and/or responsibilities at any time.
- Guide, support, and coordinate the daily work of the Technicians and provide on-the-job training, shift oversight, and peer leadership while supporting departmental standards and objectives.
- Acts as a good steward of DZCA resources.
- The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of DZCA.
- This position will interact with managers at all levels and staff members across the organization, in addition to members of external organizations and the public.
Technical / Professional Requirements & Qualifications
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, are preferred.
- Safety & Compliance: Strong knowledge of workplace safety hazards and precautions, including OSHA standards and zoo-specific safety protocols, with the ability to recognize risks, take corrective action, and promote a culture of safety among staff.
- Equipment Operation: Skilled in the use and safe operation of custodial and grounds equipment (e.g., scrubbers, vacuums, blowers, extractors, and pressure washers). Ability to train staff in proper usage and ensure routine maintenance and care of equipment.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to assess operational challenges, identify root causes, and provide timely and practical solutions. Demonstrates sound judgment in escalating issues appropriately while maintaining workflow.
- Leadership & Communication: Strong organizational, written, and oral communication skills. Capable of giving real-time feedback, documenting performance observations, and mentoring team members. Skilled in prioritizing tasks, delegating when appropriate, and supporting team alignment with departmental standards.
- Adaptability: Ability to perform and lead effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment with shifting priorities and deadlines. Flexible in responding to changing schedules, unexpected operational needs, and cross-departmental requests.
- Teamwork & Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, fostering a positive and respectful workplace culture. Comfortable collaborating with colleagues across multiple departments to ensure organizational goals are met.

Position Conditions

Compensation
The salary range for this position is $23.00 -$24.00 (hourly).
