Position Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Program Coordinator, the Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Victim Advocate assists the Police Department in providing 24/7 victim emergency assistance, through the Emergency Response Crisis Hotline. Provides crucial and informative up-to-date information and resources about Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, through continued Education and Community Outreach. Maintains the highest confidentiality for all victims of crime.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
· Program intake and initial assessment, case management, crisis intervention, support services, and works closely with the local domestic violence shelter coordinators for screening and placement. Advocate Care/Support/Follow up from beginning to end of a victim’s case with continued guidance. Provides direct emergency services for victims/survivors of crime 24/7.
· Encourages and assists clients with filling out and filing Temporary Protection Orders/Stalking/Harassment Orders, Eviction, Divorce and Child-Custody paperwork. Able to provide financial assistance as needed for court filing fees. Acts as a liaison between law enforcement and the courts. Court advocacy by accompanying victims to criminal/civil court.
· Provides immediate needs to include, but not limited to services such as, temporary shelter via hotel placement, clothing, groceries, cellular phone, fuel, transportation and rental assistance. All services are on a case by case basis.
· Assists with Domestic Violence prevention presentations and outreach focusing on juvenile education for prevention and crime deterrence to include a strong focus on Teen Dating Violence.
· Facilitates support groups, such as “Trauma in Life” prepares materials for distribution.
· Provides client referrals to our Network of resources, which include, Law Enforcement, Legal Services, Social Services, Mental Health Agencies, Counseling, Medical, Substance Abuse Programs, Schools, Community Organizations, Faith-Based Organizations, Low Income Housing, TANF, Welfare and VOCA for Nevada and California VCP. (Victim Compensation Program).Advocates are trained in Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Advocate training include, SAFETALK/Suicide Prevention, Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Trainings, Trauma Informed Care, Strangulation Prevention, Human Trafficking, Trainings.
· Washoe Tribe Advocates are Domestic Violence Nationally Accredited within 1 year of employment.
· Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Associate's Degree in education/ or social work, and two years experience working with individuals or families in crisis situations which may include domestic violence or sexual assault.
· Preference will be given to Qualified Native Americans.
Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
· Knowledge of applicable federal, state, county and local laws, regulations, and requirements.
· Knowledge of the Tribal judicial system.
· Knowledge of the effects and consequences of victimization.
· Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
· Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
· Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice, and desire to help when dealing with people.
· Ability to work flexible and extended hours and various work schedules.
· Ability to analyze situations and adopt appropriate courses of action and make effective decisions in emergencies.
· Ability to accept the dangers and stresses, regimentation, discipline, and time demands of working with domestic violence victims and witnesses.
· Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to walk, work in various types of weather; occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Evening and/or weekend work and on-call is required. Travel may be required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations and other events.
Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level.
The Washoe Tribe of Nevada & California requires a background check of each new hire for employment purposes. Therefore, all conditionally offered positions will be subject to the following:
