About the Department

The Forsyth County Department of Public Health has an opening for a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner. This position provides clinical duties in the Public Health STI clinic. The STI Clinic Provider is a key member of the public health team and is responsible for delivering high-quality, patient-centered care to individuals seeking STI services. Responsibilities include: 1) performing complete medical histories and physical examinations, laboratory testing when necessary; prescribing medications and educating 2) reviewing histories and physical assessment finding of Enhanced Role RN's and providing consultation for abnormal findings and treatment for patients whose results are positive. The mid-level provider may also make referrals to other local or state agencies or health department services and collaborate with community partners as indicated. May also be involved in policy development and review.

Position Duties

Clinical Skills

  • Proficiency in diagnosing, treating, and managing sexually transmitted infections.
  • Strong knowledge of CDC and state STI treatment guidelines.
  • Ability to perform physical exams, order/interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe appropriate medications.
  • Familiarity with HIV prevention strategies (e.g., PrEP, PEP) and partner treatment protocols.

Public Health & Preventive Care Skills

  • Understanding of epidemiology, disease transmission, and public health reporting requirements.
  • Experience providing risk-reduction counseling and health education to diverse populations.
  • Ability to integrate prevention strategies into patient care (vaccinations, safer sex counseling, harm reduction).

Communication & Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong ability to provide compassionate, nonjudgmental, and confidential care.
  • Effective communication with patients of varying cultural, educational, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Skill in counseling patients on sensitive topics such as sexual health, risk behaviors, and partner notification.

Collaboration & Teamwork

  • Experience working as part of a multidisciplinary team (nurses, outreach staff, disease intervention specialists, lab staff).
  • Ability to collaborate with community partners and public health agencies.

Organizational & Technical Skills

  • Competence in using electronic health records and maintaining accurate documentation.
  • Time management skills to balance direct patient care with administrative and reporting requirements.
  • Flexibility to adapt to evolving public health needs (e.g., outbreak response, community screening events).

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a Physician Assistant program approved by the N. C. Board of Medical Examiners and approved to practice medical acts based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners or;

Licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Board of Nursing, graduation from a Nurse practitioner program approved by the N. C. Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of medical Examiners, and approved to practice medical acts based on education and experience by the Joint Subcommittee.

Prefer one year of experience working as an extender and at least two years of experience in working as a physician extender in a clinical setting.  

Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) preferred.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS: Approved to practice specified medical acts by the North Carolina Board of medical Examiners or by the Joint Subcommittee of the North Carolina Board of Nursing and the North Carolina Board of Medical Examiners.

Clinical Provider essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:


  • Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including sexual and medical history, physical exams, and diagnostic testing.
  • Diagnose, treat, and manage sexually transmitted infections in accordance with CDC and state guidelines.
  • Prescribe medications, administer treatments, and provide follow-up care as clinically indicated.
  • Counsel patients on STI prevention, risk reduction, partner notification, and safer sexual practices.
  • Provide education and support regarding HIV prevention strategies, including PrEP and PEP.
  • Collaborate with nurses, disease intervention specialists, and other staff to ensure coordinated and timely patient care.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential documentation within the electronic health record system.
  • Participate in outbreak response, community outreach clinics, and public health initiatives as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with public health reporting requirements for communicable diseases.
  • Promote culturally competent and equitable care for all patients, with sensitivity to diverse backgrounds and needs.
  • Stay current with emerging STI/HIV treatment guidelines, trends, and best practices through continuing education.
  • Being cross trained in other clinical areas such as Family Planning, to be able to provide assistance as needed.
