About the Department
The City of Manassas is accepting applications for our Airfield Grounds Technician with the Manassas Regional Airport! This position is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of airfield infrastructure, equipment, and grounds.
The hiring range is: $25.00 – $34.38 per hour, DOQ.

Position Duties
- Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment including zero-turn mowers, skid steers, front-end loaders, tractors, dump trucks (single and tandem), snow brooms, snow plows, snow blowers, sweeper trucks, brush trucks, and tractors with mounted mowing or spraying equipment.
- Maintains airport airside and groundside: mows runways, taxiways, roads and airport-owned property; plants, trims, edges, and weeds beds; trims trees in runway approach surfaces and roadways; applies pesticides, herbicides, deicing material and fertilizers; removes litter, brush, and debris. Asphalt crack sealing and painting.
- Installs and maintains landscaping, irrigation systems, and perimeter security fencing when applicable to airport property.
- Performs preventive maintenance and minor repair on equipment: changes oil, greases parts, sharpens blades, replaces hydraulic lines and valves, and conducts tune-ups.
- Drives special-purpose vehicles with mounted tanks to for applying de-icing chemicals and pellets, insecticides, or other liquids. Performs runway friction measurement, and participates in bird and wildlife control and removal.
- Responds to emergencies including inclement weather, aircraft recovery assistance, and snow/ice removal operations; may serve as lead operator during snow events.
- Receives, prepares, and maintains records such as work orders, maintenance reports, spray records, time cards, and logs.
- Communicates with supervisors, co-workers, contractors, and the public to coordinate activities, exchange information, and resolve issues
- Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Four (4) years’ experience in airfield, grounds or roadway maintenance including operation of medium to heavy equipment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Other Qualifications
Must possess and maintain valid Virginia Class B Commercial Driver’s License and Virginia Pesticide Applicator’s license.
