The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Volunteer Coordinator is a member of The Bowery Mission’s Development Team. The Volunteer Services team provides critical support across the organization with the help of over 12,000 volunteers each year. As we implement a new strategic plan for Volunteer Services, the Volunteer Coordinator will play an important role in expanding and increasing the effectiveness of this department. The Coordinator will be an important face of The Bowery Mission to volunteers and other stakeholders, able to welcome and lead groups with a high standard of hospitality and professionalism. He or she should be comfortable leading teams and speaking to groups of various sizes and backgrounds. The Coordinator will be responsible for collaborating daily with client-facing staff to assess needs, and leveraging volunteer services to fill those needs. The Coordinator will interact daily with volunteers and will actively collaborate with the Development and program teams, helping to build partnerships and continually improve the volunteer experience.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Oversee the volunteer experience, including greeting, orienting, and troubleshooting on site issues to ensure smooth deployment across tasks.
- Collaborate with Volunteer Services staff to conduct training and orientations, fostering understanding of each volunteer’s role in the organization’s mission.
- Provide ongoing administrative support, including scheduling, communication, and maintaining accurate records in the Volunteer Hub database as well as enforce procedures and policies.
- Build relationships with volunteers both in-person and on the phone, and make notes on each volunteer group or individual expressing greater interest, keeping track of group preferences and strengths.
- Prepare reports for leadership and program effectiveness to ensure accurate data is reported regarding our corporate, church groups, and campus specific volunteers.
- Coordinate and collaborate with various teams regarding volunteer activities for Thanksgiving Week and Day, including scheduling, role assignments, and ensuring volunteers have the resources and guidance needed to support event operations effectively.
- Assist with capturing content for our volunteer newsletters, social media posts and website blogs, actively looking for ways to engage the public to our volunteer program (especially during Volunteer Appreciation month).
- Prepare reports and analyze volunteer survey responses to enhance the volunteer experience.
Schedule: Monday - Friday: 9:00am-5:30pm
The role includes responsibility for specific volunteer shifts and will require some work early mornings, late nights, and on weekends. The Volunteer Coordinator must be available to work Thanksgiving Week and Thanksgiving Day. This role will be primarily based at the Tribeca Campus but support all other campuses – currently our Flagship and West Harlem Campuses and will require travel to other program sites. This role is not suitable for remote work.
Requirements:
- Embraces the organization’s Statement of Faith.
- Minimum of 2 years of professional experience, preferably in the non-profit sector.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Growing passion for the work of The Bowery Mission and compassion for those experiencing homelessness and poverty.
Preferred:
- Experience managing individual or group volunteers is a plus.
- Experience with databases such as Volunteer Hub and Salesforce.
- Photography and writing skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
Salary commensurate with relevant education & experience: $50,000 - $55,000 annually.
