Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.   

 

Role Overview

The Environmental Manager serves as a UST compliance inspector to achieve UST facility compliance with statutes, rules and standards relating to UST compliance. They determine facility compliance, analyzes problems, and recommends a course of action to bring owners and operators into compliance, including necessary gathering of evidence and serving as an expert witness in legal proceedings. They are called upon to conduct special studies and projects when necessary.

 


Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

• Inspects underground storage tank (UST) systems for compliance with rules;

• Collects, manages and analyzes documents related to underground storage tank compliance;

• Prepares reports, reviews and evaluates UST compliance documents;

• Evaluates and documents environmental violations;

• Prepares and develops enforcement information;

• Responds to inquiries from citizens, regulated communities, and government officials;

• Attends safety and job related training;

• Assists in the review, revision and development of state standards for programs;

• Researches technical literature and organizes and maintains library of reference material;

What You'll Need for Success:

• Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a college education in natural, physical, biological or environmental science, or engineering;

• Broad knowledge of theories, environmental protection principles and practices, specialty area and program area;

• Ability to conduct surveys, inspections and investigations of facilities and sites, review projects/situations, read plans, interpret findings and make recommendations;

• Knowledge of applicable state and federal codes and laws, rules, regulations, guidelines and acts;

• Ability to prepare documents for administrative and regulatory action using a broad set of software applications;

• Ability to perform in a professional manner and make sound recommendations under extremely stressful situations;

• Excellent research and writing skills for preparing accurate, precise, clear and thorough reports;

• Ability to effectively interact with parties with diverse levels of environmental expertise particularly for purposes of meetings, hearings and negotiating critically sensitive issues;

• Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;

• Ability to interpret and apply legal terminology and practices and ability to apply these in a variety of conditions and situations

 

Preferred Experience:

• Four year degree in an environmental or related science area; or

• Significant applicable work experience
