About the Department

We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Dean of Distance Education and Professional Development located at our campus in Menifee, CA. Under the direct supervision of the Vice President of Instruction, the Associate Dean of Distance Education and Professional Development will assume primary responsibility for professional development programs and provide leadership in distance education courses and programs district wide. The Associate Dean will assist in the planning and developing of academic programs in collaboration with faculty, classified professionals, and other educational institutions and agencies. In addition, the Associate Dean will promote courses/workshops and services, curriculum, and course development and evaluation. The Associate Dean has managerial responsibilities over faculty and staff associated with programs of this position.
 

This is an administrative position, exempt from overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act, with responsibility for formulation and recommendation of district policies, regulations and budget decisions related to the area of responsibility. 


Initial placement on the salary schedule will be commensurate with education and experience, along with a cell phone allowance stipend.  This is a 12-month administrative position with day and evening assignments. Academic administrators serve under contract and make contributions toward CalSTRS (a retirement plan). Benefit package includes comprehensive medical, dental and vision plans, life insurance, sick leave, and 22 days of vacation per year. While this current vacancy is expected at the Menifee Valley Campus, Administrators serve District-wide and may be assigned to the San Jacinto Campus, the Menifee Valley Campus, the Temecula Valley Campus, or any District facility.  Additional openings that become available prior to the end of the hiring process may also be filled from the qualified applicants.

Position Duties

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements and duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to this class.

  • Assist with the development of goals and policies for PD and DE; develop new programs and scheduling options based on community and college input
  • Direct, coordinate and participate in activities involved in planning, developing, scheduling, organizing, implementing, evaluating, and managing professional development programs
  • Work in collaboration with other administrators and faculty to develop, schedule, support, and provide professional development for distance education courses
  • Develop staffing priorities for assigned areas
  • Manage the administrative components of Flex reporting as it pertains to individual faculty reporting and compliance reporting to the Chancellor's Office
  • Evaluate program needs for equipment, facility, and learning resources
  • Develop and recommend to the Vice President of Instruction the instructional/operating budget for assigned areas
  • Monitor and take necessary action regarding instructional expenditures for assigned areas
  • Promote the implementation of the effective use of technology in the classroom as well as the development and implementation of professional development activities to encourage its implementation
  • Participate in the hiring processes for full & part-time faculty, classified professionals, and administrators with consideration given to diversity in ethnicity, gender, clinical specialty, experience, and regulatory and accreditation requirements
  • Supervise, evaluate, and participate in any disciplinary actions deemed appropriate for full & part time faculty and classified professionals
  • May oversee and support instructional and/or student support programs
  • Implement and coordinate the planning and review of the education programs and services for assigned areas
  • Assume a leadership role in the development of programs within the disciplines assigned; as well as in the identification and development of new programs to meet emerging community needs
  • Assume responsibility for developing, implementing, coordinating, and reporting functions for categorically funded programs for the disciplines assigned
  • Balance multiple competing priorities in developing integrated short and long-term plans for optimal use of district resources
  • Assess and evaluate assigned programs and initiatives using outcomes-based measures
  • Participate in a variety of committee and staff meetings in support of distance education and professional development programs
  • Assist with supervision of instructional programs as needed to support the Pathway structure
  • Represent the college with community groups as appropriate
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The incumbent should possess knowledge of:
  • State of California and federal regulations regarding the array of disciplines assigned
  • Adult pedagogy, student learning outcomes theory and practice
  • Distance learning and their applications to the community college
  • Staff and Organizational Development strategies
  • General fund and categorical budgeting processes; financial and statistical record-keeping techniques
  • Practices of employee supervision, training, evaluation principles, recognition, and progressive discipline
  • Appropriate organizational and management practices and processes.
 
The incumbent should possess skills in:
  • Problem solving
  • Written and oral communication; oral and written English language usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary
  • Interpersonal relations and customer service
  • Handling multiple assignments simultaneously and set priorities based on customer needs 
 
The incumbent should possess the ability to:
  • Forecast and plan education programs
  • Read, interpret, apply, and explain laws, guidelines, and regulations
  • Develop and implement innovative student success programs utilizing alternative funding sources
  • Develop and maintain accurate records and reports
  • Prepare and deliver oral presentations and training
  • Work with diverse student, staff, and community populations

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. A Master's degree; (attach transcripts) AND
  2. One (1) year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's assignment; AND
  3. Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • A Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in Instructional Design preferred
  • Experience in the supervision of community college programs
  • Faculty experience in a community college
  • Demonstrated expertise in proven teaching strategies that support student achievement
  • Demonstrated ability to manage financial resources with a record of fiscal responsibility and accountability
  • Familiarity with California Education Code and Title 5
  • Demonstrated advocacy for students and students' needs
  • Demonstrated currency of knowledge of both distance education and professional development in an educational environment
  • Experience in facilitation of professional development for faculty, classified professionals, and administrators
