CUSTODIAN

DEFINITION
Under the direction of the lead custodian, and supervision of the site administrator and maintenance and operation supervisor, to maintain an assigned school facility, group of buildings, or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner following a predetermined schedule; and to do related work as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Personnel in this job classification may perform any combination of the essential duties shown below. • Sweeps, dusts, cleans, mops, washes, and/or polishes classrooms, restrooms, or other areas, as required.
• Assists other employees in cleaning, moving and arrangement of furniture and equipment, as required.
• Cleans and picks up papers or other debris from grounds, walk areas, and the areas adjacent to the facilities.
• Empties and cleans waste receptacles.
• Waters assigned planted areas, as required.
• Replaces light bulbs and lighting tubes.
• Performs emergency cleanup service resulting from breakage, vandalism, spilling, and illness.
• Assists in receiving and distributing supplies and equipment.
• Performs minor maintenance tasks in keeping assigned areas safe and operational.
• Assists in reporting and preventing facility vandalism.
• Maintains a secure environment; locks and unlocks doors and gates, as required.
Follows general safety and hazardous materials procedures.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Janitorial supplies, equipment, and safe use of chemicals required to clean and sanitize;
Basic cleaning methods, procedures, and techniques;
Safe working methods and procedures.
Ability to:
Perform medium to moderately heavy manual activities and functions;
Efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies, and equipment;
Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
• Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
• This work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps, and will involve walking or standing for extended periods.
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
• Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather may occasionally be experienced.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:
Responsible experience involved with the care and cleaning of buildings and facilities or experience in maintenance work, preferably in a school setting.
Education:
Twelfth grade diploma or the equivalent.
License Requirement: Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and adequate insurance coverage on your vehicle.
Condition of Employment: Insurability by District’s liability insurance carrier. Employment is contingent upon fingerprint and background clearance, and proof of a recent negative tuberculosis test result.
