General Engineering Tech I
Performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex maintenance contract inspection; light and heavy equipment operation; roadway maintenance; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
General Engineering Tech II
Performs and coordinates highly advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as construction and/or complex contract maintenance inspection, light and heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance, traffic control, helping the public during emergency situations, and training other employees. May serve as a lead worker. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.
Essential Duties:
General Engineering Tech I
- Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
- Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
- Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work, including hot mix overlay, to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications, and departmental procedures.
- Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals, and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
- Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices, safety laws, rules, regulations, and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
- May serve as a lead worker and the related tasks.
- May train other employees.
- Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures at construction sites, documents changes in the traffic control setup, and coordinates with the Public Information Officer.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public, and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
General Engineering Tech II
Includes all essential duties listed for General Engineering Tech I, as well as:
- Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement contracts, total maintenance, performance-based, and/or bundled bid contracts.

Minimum Qualifications:
General Engineering Tech I
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 4 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
General Engineering Tech II
Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.
Experience: 6 years in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year-by-year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour

- Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
