Department Information
The Library and Cultural Services Departments vision is to empower an environment of lifelong learning and cultural enrichment by stimulating learning and literacy, inspiring creativity, and integrating arts, culture and history into the lives of Aurorans.  We have two divisions within the department: Library and Cultural Services, both offering a variety of free programs and services to the community.  Please go to www.auroralibrary.org to learn more about the Aurora Public Library.

Position Information

The city of Aurora is searching for experienced Dance Instructors for the Aurora Dance Arts program. We are looking for responsible & qualified instructors to teach ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, poms and/or hip hop at all levels.

This is classified as a VHNE (Variable Hour Non-Benefited Employee), where the position does not provide medical benefits. This position earns sick leave in accordance with the Healthy Families and Workplace Act.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicates in a timely manner via email or phone
  • Provides a positive dance class atmosphere
  • Maintains good classroom control
  • Teaches dance technique & terminology within the scope of the Aurora Dance Arts syllabus
  • Takes attendance
  • Hands out written materials & keeps classes informed of current information & schedules
  • Responsible for onsite communication with recreation center staff as need & relays information back to supervisor
  • Maintains security of various rec center facilities upon opening and closing
  • Assists with various events, performances & concerts of Aurora Dance Arts & Cultural Arts
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

 An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be considered. 

Education:   

  • BFA in Dance Preferred  

  • Will consider strong dance background as alternative 

 

Experience:   

  • Training at various levels & styles of dance from beginning to advanced  

  • Must be at least 16 years old. Ages 18+ preferred.  

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • Previous experience as a dance teaching assistant 

  • Observation of other instructors’ teaching methods & studio environments  

  • Be able to provide own transportation to teaching sites  

  • Experience working with children/youth  

 

Knowledge: 

  • Working knowledge of dance training, technique and terminology 

  • Working knowledge of classroom management techniques  

Skills: 

  • Strong interpersonal skills  

  • Communicates well with a diverse audience 

  • Handles stress in an appropriate and effective manner; friendly, courteous, and kind 

Abilities:   

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service. 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and citizens 

  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing 

  • Works varied schedule that includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays 

  • Must be comfortable working alone 

 

Licenses and Certifications Required:   

  • N/A  

WORKING CONDITIONS  

Essential Personnel:  

  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel. 

Physical Demands: 

  • Requires eye/hand/body/foot coordination for technical dance demonstration 

  • Moderate to heavy physical work depending on assignment 

  • Occasional work that involves moving no more than 50 pounds with or without assistance  

  • Occasional lifting, carrying, walking, and standing 

  • Clear vision to read and interpret reports and other written documents 

  • Speech communication and hearing to maintain communication with employees and citizens 

  • Hand/eye coordination for operation of office equipment 

Work Environment: 

  • Works primarily indoors but may work outdoors assisting with a program or outreach events in varying weather conditions 

Equipment Used: 

  • Uses standard office equipment including personal computer and common office software such as email, internet, Word, Excel and databases  

  • Musical equipment such as stereos/portable amps 

  • This position may require the incumbent to use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) throughout course of their employment
