Summary
Baystate Health is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Labor & Delivery Surgical Technologist to join our compassionate, fast-paced team. This vital role supports the surgical care of birthing patients by ensuring optimal preparation, execution, and monitoring of surgical procedures—particularly cesarean sections and other operative births.
Under the direction of the Unit Manager, RN Clinical Operations Coordinator, and RN Service Leads, the Surgical Technologist will assist physicians and surgeons by preparing and maintaining the sterile field, anticipating procedural needs, and facilitating efficient, safe, and patient-centered care in the operative suite.
This position requires advanced knowledge of aseptic technique, human anatomy, and surgical procedures, along with the ability to work in high-stakes environments while providing respectful and empathetic care to patients and families.
Key Responsibilities
Surgical Support:
Prepare the Labor & Delivery operating suite for surgical procedures, including appropriate setup of instrumentation, equipment, and sterile supplies.First Scrub Role:
Maintain proficiency in the first scrub role, anticipating the surgeon’s needs and ensuring proper sterile field maintenance throughout the procedure.Adaptability:
Respond to rapidly changing conditions in emergent OB cases with professionalism and technical expertise.Knowledge Integration:
Apply understanding of normal and abnormal anatomy, pathology, and pharmacological agents to ensure safe patient care and procedure-specific support.Multitasking & Independence:
Work independently and collaboratively, managing multiple priorities in high-pressure clinical situations.Equipment & Instrumentation:
Maintain and troubleshoot surgical equipment, ensuring readiness for all labor & delivery procedures.Education & Development:
Participate in ongoing professional development and maintain required certifications and competencies as part of Baystate’s Surgical Technologist Level III clinical recognition ladder.
Required Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited surgical technology program (Committee on Allied Health Education Association or equivalent).
Certification as a Surgical Technologist (required unless exempt under MA law prior to July 1, 2013).
Demonstrated expertise in sterile technique, anatomy, and perioperative care.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in Labor & Delivery or Women’s Health surgical procedures is strongly preferred.
Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of human anatomy and surgical instrumentation
Expertise in sterile and aseptic techniques
Excellent organizational and communication skills
Ability to remain calm and focused in high-acuity, emergent situations
Technical proficiency with surgical tools and technologies
