SUMMARY OF POSITION: The Technical Director is a temporary role which provides leadership and oversight for all technical operations, ensuring Zoo Knoxville delivers a world-class multimedia experience through immersive shows and events. This role directly supervises the Audio Visual Manager and oversees all technical teams and vendors. The Technical Director is responsible for the successful installation, integration, and operation of the Moment Factory show, along with long-term technical planning, system optimization, and innovation. The duration of this role is anticipated to run September 2025 through March 2026. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership & Oversight

Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Audio Visual Manager and technical teams.
Oversee daily technical operations while focusing on long-term planning, innovation, and excellence.
Serve as the primary liaison between Zoo Knoxville leadership, creative partners, and external vendors.
Ensure all technical initiatives align with organizational goals and guest experience standards.
Enforce safety standards for both audiences and staff, including emergency lighting and evacuation readiness.
Respect natural surroundings, ensuring operations minimize noise/light spill and adhere to site restrictions.
Moment Factory Show & Special Installations
Lead the planning, coordination, and installation of the Moment Factory show.
Manage relationships with Moment Factory engineers, designers, and vendors to ensure technical and creative integrity.
Oversee seasonal transitions, updates, and new technical installations across the property.
Ensure shows are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to the highest professional standards.
Accurate logging of incidents, maintenance work, and system updates to ensure smooth long-term operations.
Technical Operations
Provide oversight of AV, lighting, projection, and IT/networking systems managed by the Audio Visual Manager.
Approve preventive maintenance strategies and ensure operational excellence across all systems.
Maintain high-level understanding of system architecture, integration, and performance standards.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and industry best practices.
Project & Vendor Coordination:
Manage third-party contractors for installation, upgrades, and maintenance.
Develop and manage budgets for technical projects, capital improvements, and system enhancements.
Track assets, procurement needs, and equipment lifecycles in collaboration with the Audio Visual Manager.
Team Development
Mentor and support the Audio Visual Manager, providing guidance on technical and leadership growth toward assuming the Technical Director role.
Ensure adequate staffing and training to support daily operations and seasonal demands.
Foster a collaborative, innovative, and safety-conscious team culture.
QUALIFICATIONS:
5+ years of experience in technical direction, production management, or related field (theatrical, theme park, live entertainment, or immersive environments).
Strong knowledge of AV/IT systems, lighting, projection, and media servers, with the ability to oversee highly complex technical environments.
Experience running large-scale outdoor technical installations, ensuring reliability of lighting, audio, video, and control systems on a nightly basis.
Background in theatrical or entertainment technology environments.
Strong ability to quickly diagnose and resolve technical issues (power, networking, playback, signal distribution) under time constraints.
Knowledge of routine inspections, weatherproofing solutions, and long-term care of IP-rated outdoor equipment.
Proven leadership skills, with experience managing managers and cross-functional technical teams.
Demonstrated success in large-scale show installation or production integration.
Excellent vendor management, budgeting, and project management skills.
Strong troubleshooting, decision-making, and problem-solving ability in high-pressure environments.
Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required by show schedules.
Competence in monitoring generators, electrical loads, and cabling during live operations.
Hands-on experience with DMX/Art-Net lighting networks and distributed Dante outdoor sound systems, ensuring consistent performance across multiple show zones.
Familiarity with synchronized playback systems (timecode, QSYS, GrandMA3), ensuring correct daily startup, shutdown, and reset procedures.
Ability to lead nightly technical crews and maintain efficient shift operations.
LSO Certification (can be obtained upon hire).
Ability to lift 50+ lbs, work at heights, and perform duties in dark/low-light environments.
Preferred:
Certifications in AVIXA, Dante, CompTIA, or relevant vendor technologies.

WORKING CONDITIONS: As an employee of Zoo Knoxville, you must possess English communication skills as well as the ability to communicate using a 2-way radio, email, and telephone. The position hours vary depending on business needs and will require weekend and some holiday shifts. Depending on the specific tasks, this position will be required to work within close proximity of exotic and domestic animals and must be aware that there are dangers inherent in working under those conditions.
